It's not bad to be scarred of the dark. Plus if you get up in the middle of the night you want break your foot or any other bone bumping or falling over things. Plus today the crime rates are awful. My parents are in there 70's and they have a night light in the kitchen. You could have been scared when you were a child while you were in the dark. I had a nephew who had a step dad think it was cool to go in his bed room at 3am with a mask on, and when I found out I wanted to say something . But it didn't come out until the divorce. So he's gone but the child has problems from a cruel joke from an immature person. I just think you are better off with a night light and don't worry about what people say. I like night lights. I can see a robber and shot him in my house if I have to. We have to protect ourselves in our neighborhood it has turned into drug ville. I live on a dirt road in the woods so people know don't go down there she don't play. I'm here to protect my family and my house.

It's not lame...many people have tripped and fallen in the dark. I always sleep with either the TV or at least a nightlight on. I am always afraid that a mouse or huge bug has gotten into the house--and that I will step on it if I can't see. I also fear banging into something if I need to get up.

As adults who know that there is nothing hiding in the dark, we are supposed to be rational, collected, and unafraid. Of course, showing a fear of the dark (or of anything else really) is seen as a weakness of some sort. A fear of the dark is a larger weakness than say a fear of flying because the dark can't usually harm you in any significant way (whereas I suppose an airplane could crash). Thus for adults to be afraid of the dark is "lame" and usually looked on as silly. Good for you for being able to admit it though, and find out why. All problems have roots and when you get to it it's easier to get rid of the problem. Sometimes I still check under my bed to see if anything's there before bedtime.

Everyone is afraid of something or another. I also have an irrational fear and I don't know why. I'm terrified of chickens! And I'm not normally even around them. I have a hard enough time seeing them on tv let alone in person.

Because as adults we realize that dark is not to be feared on its own. But, sometimes for good reasons and sometimes for what seems like no reason at all, we have fears. My fear is bull roasts...no kidding. I have social anxiety and they are my greatest fear...I don't even know why. I don't care about them, so I just don't go to any.

many times, a fear of the dark can be translated as a fear of the unknown, as we are not able to see in the dark our natural instinct kicks in and keeps us alert, so it's just instinct, it shouldn't be considered lame just because ur an adult, it's not like u can do anything about it

I have a small night light in each room so I can see if I wake up. No bright lights to turn on and no stumbling in the dark.

The only thing you have to Fear is Fear itself, as you get in bed, say some short prayer over and over, if your not religious then pick anything nice, like I love you very much, over and over, and you will fall asleep without fear!
