In the process of looking at engagement rings but after the hell I've gone through with my promise ring, I'm super-scared of buying a ring that I'm stuck with for life that's going to be unbearable to wear. My promise ring is 10K white gold and it first made my finger red itchy, now it has thick scales extending to all 4 fingers, between them and down to my palm, I've had the same reaction to necklaces but do OK with "hypoallergenic" earrings. My question is--what metal is best? White gold? Yellow gold? Platinum? What carat has the lowest quanity of nickel? I don't want a ring that is miserable to wear, I want a ring I love as much as I love him!

I know there are products to coat the ring, nail polish and otherwise, but I'd like to avoid having to do that all the time.

Platinum is always best. 24K would be next, 18K contains nickel, as does rose gold and anything below 24K.

Silver is probably your best bet. When you go to jewerly stores they will be able to tell you if the ring has nickel in it. If you wear glasses on of the best metals to get with them is titanium. As for gold it has nickel in it so it is not so soft.

I've tried putting nail polish on rings and watches with not much luck. It wears off in no time and I find it annoying.

I would also look on websites about nickel free jewelry and nickel allergy.

My mom taught me a trick years ago because my daughter was allergic to metals..I use a clear nail polish on the inner part of the ring and no problems since and no one knows
