Trek / VW has the most winningest mountain bike team in North America...
Lifetime Warranty on the frame, crash replacement policy in writing, 5 year warranty on Bontrager parts = the industry's best coverage.
That stands for something!
Family owned and operated by the SAME family for over 30 years - they must be doing something right...
Oh yeah, that Lance Armstrong guy didn't hurt things either!
Not my opinion - just facts... you did ask for the best, right...
Enjoy!

Bikes within a certain price range are pretty similar. Suspension (rear) designs vary but other than that most parts specs are close enough. Visit a few bike shops in your area, decide how much bike you need and buy it from the shop that you feel gave you the best service. You will have to deal with them in the future so that should be a major factor in the purchase decision. What kind of deal are they going to make on all the accessories you will have to buy? What kind of service/tune up package comes with the bike (typically at least one 30 day tune up although many offer much more)? IF you are buying a full suspension bike, design does count. Specialized makes a nice bike as does Trek/Fisher and Giant. On the higher end it's hard to go wrong with a Ventana, Ellsworth, Santa Cruz or Intense. Good luck & have fun!

I think the best mountain bike for the money (in the full suspension world) is the Specialized Stumpjumper FSR. They make several different models, and all of them are at the top of their category for price to value, and just all around quality.
I own an S-Works Stumpjumper FSR, and my boyfriend has a Stumpjumper FSR Comp. I am an experienced rider. I have owned Santa Cruz bikes, Ellsworth, and some other not so special bikes at the beginning of my riding "career". The FSR Comp is my boyfriend's first "real" mountain bike, and he grins like a kid every time we ride. He also threw it off a cliff on its 3rd ride (in Fruita, CO) and all that happened was a flat rear tire.
Specialized bikes are the best I have ridden, even having access to the "boutique" brands. They will not let you down.

Depends what you want to do and how much money you are looking at.
You may as well pay a few pounds for a mountain bike magazine to get an answer to this question. MBR tends to rate bikes out of ten. However, this is only their oppinion.
The best bike for you would be the one that does what you want and is comfortable, suiting your riding style. However, this is primarily a components game. Look at the quality of the components. These will dictate how well the bike performs.
Luck

There is no "Best mountain bike" . It depends on what terrain you're riding in . Some people may choose a heavy hucker , while others may go for a light XC bike. What Alex says is very true . Be it freeride , jump , XC , road or downhill , there is no best mountain bike ,even in its own category .
