I know split ends need to be cut, but I want to know exactly why I have them so I can stop them coming back. I use a bristle brush once a day, I dont brush wet hair, I dont blow dry, I use pantene shampoo and conditioner, and hair moistureiser, I dont colour my hair, or straighten it, I eat a lot of protien, no one else in my family has this problem but only my sister has long hair.
My hair is really split, even the short ones, it is a light brown colour. It is down to my shoulderblades, I have only ever cut it a few times in my life, and the split ends always come back quickly, latley it has gotten worse (possibly because it was summer) I dont want to cut it too short as I need to be able to tie it back, but the damage goes all the way up, is it pointless to cut it? can it be genetic like dry skin? my hair grows really fine.

I've also noticed my hair dosn't just split at the ends it starts as a weak point in the hair which looks lighter, thats where it will break from. i've also tried trimming my own hair about an inch, but there is no notacible diffrence, it just seems to split again, I worry that this will happen after I get it cut and I will of completly wasted my money and have worse looking hair.

Split ends are just that. The hair splits in 2 or more pieces and continues up the hair shaft unless cut. I know that is a scary word for you but this is why we recommend you trim regularly.
I would take several inches from the bottom and put in long soft layers to get you started. The shorter hairs with split ends can be trimmed by taking a section of hair, twisting it and cutting the split hairs that stick out. It's very tedious but will stop the "split".
If you truly want your hair to be beautifully long hair, you will need to have it cut, then trimmed every 3 months to maintain.
You may want to check your brush, if the little plastic pieces for example, were missing or worn they will "rip" your hair.
Have your stylist recommend a good brush. I like Boar bristle brushes for long hair.

I know you may not want to cut your hair but the only solution to split ends is the "stainless steel treatment" or getting a hair cut. If you don't cut the split ends and get rid of them, they just keep splitting up your hair shaft. That's why you see the splits all the way up the shaft.
Keep your ends healthy by getting a cut every 6-8 weeks. And just get a TRIM not a cut...start by getting at least 1-2 inches cut off. It's going to be hard to let that go, but it'll be worth it in the long run. I always tell my clients that they need at least that to start with and to make sure they come back to see me every 6-8 weeks. otherwise it's just going to get worse.
After the cut suggest a shampoo and conditioner other than pantene. Try either Biolage (professional line), or a line called K-Pak by Joico (another professional line). Use the fortifying line by Biolage and that'll help strengthen your hair starting on the outside.
If you need anything else, just let me know.

No bristle brushes! That is part of the problem. I would suggest a vent brush with small rounded ends on the bristles. Vent brushes are made specifically for wet hair and are much easier on the hair.

Go to a good hair stylist and ask her what is going on with your hair. You may have to use salon shampoos and conditioners. Pantene is a good product, but if you have problem hair, its not the best. I would suggest that you try the Nexxus products-Therappe and Humectress. They are very moisturizing and may help some with the split ends.

Try using good shampoo and conditioner from a hair salon and don't blow dry or straighten it. The more you do this it will make you have split ends. Make sure you get it trimmed every so often. If this doesn't help, then you might just have a hereditary problem that you can try to fix if you use these tips and get your hair cut more often than most people.

Hope this helps!

Do you wear a lot of pony tails or pull your hair back in a clip a lot? This can cause some breaks in your hair.
Also, I agree with the others who say that Pantene is not the best shampoo. I know these brands are expensive, but I love Infusium and Redkin products. If you are really bothered by the split ends, it may be worth the money.

The more you get your hair cut, the healthier your hair will be. Get it layered with long layers, that should cut out the split ends and still leave your hair long. I use a product called Enjoy. If you live in Southern California you can go to Planet Beauty and get it, if not, go to their website and order it: http://www.planetbeauty.com/brands/Enjoy/

I suggest using the Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner. This product is the BEST I've ever used. You will really see a difference in your hair. Good luck!

From what i hear pantene is actually not a good shampoo to use, as it just makes it shinny with lots of chimicals and doesnt make it any good, i think you should try one like dove, see if that helps also you can get hair masks that you leave in for 10 mins and wash out, or a leave in conditioner, its nothing to do with you family its just a common thing that everyone gets, if your sis is younger than you it just may be cause her hair is not old enough, also, when you swim make sure you wash it after (straight after) cuase it can really hurt your hair.

you need to be trimming your hair on a regular basis... between 4-8 weeks depending on your problem.... if u do do all those things then u really need to include deep conditioning every week....try moisturizing ur hair b4 u brush it this may help a bit and instead of brushing try combing....this may also help in reducing the amount of slpit ends.... i think it might be best to reduce thsi a bit as you have so much splits to contend with.

Get a trim.

Use a hydrating conditioner, and leave it in for like 10 minutes. Your hair's dry.
