When playing background music during the dinner part of reception, should the songs play like a store-bought CD or have a longer pause between each song?

Which way do you think would be better?

As it is meant to be "background music" you dont want it to stand out to people. You should have the pauses be fairly short (as you would on a CD) and you should keep the music at a nice low level so that your guests can speak to each other comfortably without having to "wait for a pause" in the music to speak. If you have control over fade, you should try to fade from song to song to ease the pauses.

Your music selection should be such that the music fades into the background so people can talk without being distracted.

As a talking point you may want to choose something unusual or interesting (but not too much so) then people can talk about what they are listening to.

The pause really doesn't matter. If the pause is too long people may notice and it will be a distraction.

Have soft background music that still allows guests to visit. Sinatra is great music.
