Sounds like a habit you got to comfort yourself and just never outgrew. If a trauma happened when you were younger this could be the cause. Try talking to a psychiatrist. If this is not the case put an oven mitt on your hand. I mean ductape it. It won't be good to bite and you will stop. You have no disease and don't need medication.

i believe it is something that you have just become accustommed to as a child. You dont have a mental illness or anything that serious, but you probably just started doing it as a child, and for some reason it calmed you (being a child you didnt know why so you kept doing it) so you continued belieiving it will still calm you. If you are really serious about stopping the hand abuse, you either go to a doctor and they might reccomend you to someone else or something, or you can just think about why your doing as you are doing it, and stop doing it little by little till it stops

This is a habit like sucking one's thumb, or keeping a security blanket even when one gets older. I knew a grown man who actually rocked himself to sleep every night--a habit which started in early childhood.
I think that you should see a doctor, before you do any further damage to your hand. I'm uncertain as to whether or not you will need medication, but the doctor will know what to do--or where to refer you.

I think you need to see a counselor. I do not like the medications that are out there. For me they damaged my organs and have caused severe reactions. ( I have a chemically sensitive system. ) I believe that a lot of my illness have been brought on by them using me as a Ginny pig, and I count 27 different medication they have tried me on. This one shut down my kidneys and now they think one has caused diabetes, so be careful when you go the drug route. Make sure you go in to therapy to help you understand why your doing this to yourself. To me it sounds like a form of abuse to yourself. You could be wanting to lash out at someone, for they may have hurt you and turn it in on yourself. This happens a lot more than you think so get so professional advice and stop hurting yourself. Good luck and I hope you find the source of your problem. I go out and work extremely hard in the yard and lift things I'm not suppose to do. Or I eat myself hurt or loneliness away . I started back smoking and now I can't stop because learning that I have diabetes I have to work on one thing at a time so I can be successful at all of them so look at how I've hurt myself when my family members hurt me. They don't stop I'm disabled and I hear that " Oh I work on Saturdays because I don't want to be a dead beat, or I have work to pay the bills I can't depend on no one else. I would like to know who they think pays my bills? I have two ignorant brothers that don't know when I lived away from them for years that I worked two jobs supporting my kids alone! they never stop, I help my parents that they never help do one thing there to busy being drunks and helping their friends, my disabled brotherinlaw comes up and helps and he's dying, before you get to bad get help.

There is a reason for it and I would strongly suggest you talk with your DR about it and see if he/she recommends medication. Also it would be a good idea to see a counselor or a psychiatrist there may be something in your subconscious mind that they can help you uncover and deal with.
Best of luck to you!

You may have a compulsive disorder. It is good that you recognise this and want to stop this urge. I would suggest telling your doc and trying one of the newer type of antidepressants that also treats compulsions. good luck!
