Well, the way to go around clearing Christians' name is definitely not to respond with more hate towards these "idiots". And the fact is, that for every group, there will be stupid people in it to disgrace it. The larger the group is (like the biggest religion in the world) the more idiots there will be.
The best course of action for you would probably be to go out and go through life as you think Christians should. Show people that all Christians aren't the bigots you're talking about.

MARTY: As a Christian, I will give you my "two bits" worth. What you are witnessing are two types of contributors which smear the Christian name. The first group are those called "trolls", who love to indulge themselves in pretence and post controversial garbage to irritate Atheists, Agnostics and Christians. The second group, are the "religious" sect which "having a form of Godliness, deny the power thereof" !
These "religious" ones have some very bad theology as a result of misinformation and self-righteousness. These ones tend to apply legalistic practices to others and thereby, come across as "better than" or "holier-than-thou", not realizing the toxic shame imparted to non-believers. The genuine Christian has faith in God, and leaves it entirely up to Him, to do both, the converting and changing of others. Genuine Christians have a relationship with God, the Father, through Jesus Christ, grounded in SPIRITUALITY - not the legalism of religion. Also, the focus is the love of Jesus Christ to save all humans from his or her sins. "Let go and let God" is the adage held in mind. Remember; More Jesus - Less Religion ... this would resolve the "religious" problem in this world !!! Whatever, came of the catch-phrase: Be seen and not heard ?

You are upset, and I can understand that. I can also be very upset when I meet people so full of themselves, thinking they already have the ticket to Heaven and many times even treating me as if I am the one who needs pity.
The best thing we can do, other than laugh when the situation is hilarious, is try to understand and wait!! Yes, all we can do is wait.
Look, I know this lady and she is Christian. She can be annoying and very fanatic when it comes to religion matters. She raised four kids at home, because she didn't want them to be in contact with other non-Christians. Her older son is about 22 years-old. He met this girl and fell in love. They decided to live together (not married). His mother, the lady I am talking about, is desperate, because her son is in sin... Well, you know what I think? She's been so convinced she is right about her religion, so full of herself, preaching moral rules and judging everyone she knows, that God Himself has put her through such a big deception with her own son, so that she learns that we are not in control of anything. Why would God permit her son fall in sin? Why her, so devoted and faithful? Because God doesn't want us to use religion as a "show-off" type of thing, like "Look, I am going to heaven and you are not..." This is so silly and I don't even see God in those people.
The best thing is wait, cause God will show them how silly they are.
Peace!

What I wonder when I see someone claiming to be Christian, and being particularly offensive and abusive is in what way to best... approach the situation?
A couple tonight, I have taken to task... no name calling, but specifically saying that what they are doing is not a true representation of the love of Jesus.
Is this right or is it wrong?

Its very aggravating, I know. You can approach them, NICELY, and try to tell them how and why you believe they are out of line, backing it with scripture. I have done that and had successes with it, but I have also receive hate mail from my fellow alleged Christian sister/brother.
The best thing you can do though, is to not fall into the same thing you notice and disapprove of. Your words above, not so nice. I know you are angry, rightly so, however, think about it, how would have Jesus responded? How did Jesus respond as they put him on trial? How did he respond when they spit on him and flogged him? How did he respond on the cross as they mocked him and threw lots for his clothing?
"FORGIVE THEM FATHER, THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO"
Try a prayer requesting conviction by the Holy Spirit of their hearts. That they might see their wrongs and change it. If we pray for those that are lost, they just might be found.
In Jesus Christ name ......... DMD

They should act and behave in a way that positively represents christians, not calling them names, so it doesn't make you look as foolish as the ones you criticize.
