I met a guy and I explained something to him very clearly and used an example. He had no idea what I was talking about. So I explained it. He still didnt' get it. Finally I said in really basic terms.. almost baby talk. I felt I was talking down to him.. but then he got it.... I think. Is this normal between men and women? We are both intellegent adults.. we just hear different things when we talk.

Yes! We are hearing different things and what we say and in what ways are interpreted differently too. You have to be more direct with most men- like "I want you to clean the kitchen for the guest tonight or they might think that we live in a junk yard". A lot of women might say something else like "Do you think the kitchen looks okay? I talked to Jane on the phone and she recently had her kitchen painted and she's so happy." They are both intelligent comments but they mean different things to men and women. Dr. Deborah Tannin has written a good book on meta-messages and the differences between men and women and different cultures too. Yes, we do hear different things, and even after reading this book, among others, I still have trouble understanding the differences myself.
