I just got a 2000 ford mustang V6 with a standard trans. I plan to really put some money into it, but not yet. It already has cold air intake and a performance chip. Until I can afford the big expensive turbos and superchargers what are some good cheap things I can do to get more horsepower and really be able to feel a difference? I know it's a V6 but I would eventually like to drag race it.

Please do not put any stupid, smart *** answers. Thanks.

A couple years ago, 5.0 Mustang magazine was doing a buildup and dyno test of a v-6 mustang [I realize that doesn't exactly make sense but it is true] and the single biggest power adder (outside of a turbo or supercharger) was a set of cams. The ones they used were relatively mild and added mostly top end power but I thought it gained like 30-40 hp which is something you will be able to feel. I think that cams run about $300-1000 with the average being about $500 depending on where you get them etc. Be careful because most cams beyond just the stage1 will change the valve overlap and cause the car to fail state emissions. They also did a 50 shot of nitrous and that worked well too.

Be ware that sometimes you feel things like throttle response and acceleration much easier than just pure hp. I modified the throttle linkage on my ford ranger (basically the cable was not designed right from the factory and was too long to fully open the throttle even with the pedal floored and there was a soft spring between the pedal and the cable which would slow the motion of the cable). By removing the spring and shortening the cable by about 1/4 inch it felt like the truck had 25% more hp. Some things that increase response without necessarily increasing hp include throttle bodies, rear gear sets, lighter flywheels, lighter rims and tires.

Tires. People always forget about tires. Other than that, I'd say do some exhuast mods, a cat back system, then u could do a high flow cat. Headers can add some horsepower..but they areant exactly 'cheap'. But for the most part, uve done the cheap mods already.

A V6 you say? A few NOS stickers, an APC banner here and there and a fart cannon should get you off to a good start. Or if it's a convertible then put a whiny spoiled 16 year old in it. Yeah, those sound like some good mods.
