My father has been in prison for 12 years, since I was 12. I havent been in contact with him for many years, for various reasons. I have come to a point where I need to decide if I should be in contact or continue my life without him. Does any one know of an online support group or chat that can help me through this tough time, or does any one have some advice that has been in this situatin before? Any help is greatly appreciated!

My father like yours was in prison for quite a long time and through out my whole life sometimes I would hear from him and YEARS would go bye and I would hear nothing for various reasons. But no matter if your father is in your life or not he still impacts it and even through you might not want to you still love him, he's your father. I came to a point where it tucked at me wanting to have some contact with him. I just wondered if he wanted me to contact him. I wrote him a letter and I am glad I did. I continued to write him and he wrote me twice as much as I did him. But it help me come to terms with it myself. There use to be a site surviving the systems, and victims of a victimless crime. I am glad that I contacted my father and know I did not go in the same directions, far from it. I learned that the absences of him affected me more than I ever imagined.

Leave him alone,,anything over a year sounds serious ...leave well enough alone and move on with your own life..I am sorry I seem insensitive, but your father must have committed a very serious crime to be behind bars for so very long. I personally wouldnt go..and if you need answers then go, but I really wouldnt touch this. Sorry and hope someone else can help.

have you tried writing to him? if you don't really want to forget him it would be nice but also try go on with your life since his been gone so long his probably thought of you sometimes, he can be in your mind and heart at times but at least try not to follow his footsteps in crime do the opposite of what he did with his life, I think if you made something better of yourself than he did he'd be happy.
