The title of a police officer when he first enters a police force differs depending on the state and the department and city or county.

Those in training or in a police academy are called "Police Cadet", or "Police Trainee" or "Probationary Officer" or "Trooper Recruit" or "Private" or "Deputy" or "Trainee" or something like that. Many departments do not swear in an officer until he has passed his training period, and his probationary period. It varies from one department to another. Once they have been sworn in , they usually are called something like "Officer", or "Trooper" or "Ranger" or "Patrolman" or "Private", or "Deputy"or "Constable".

A person entering a police force will be considered a Probationary Officer. Depending on the jurisdiction and particular department, this status may last anywhere from 90 days to a year, as a rule. While in a probationary status, the Officer may be discharged entirely at the discretion of the Department head. The probationary Officer will usually attend a recruit school of some sort (again, time and type depend on the jurisdiction), and work with a senior Officer at first to get line-experience. Once that phase is completed, along with any other training set forth by the department, then the Officer (after his probationary time), advances beyond the probationary status to that of a regular Police Officer. Hope this helps.

At the police academy they refered to everyone as a cadet, even if you were 40.

You were then a officer (on probation) working with a training officer for the first period out of school,

Then just a officer after you get out of your training period.

some departments have a corporal position some don't, then comes Sgt. With each rank comes more supervision duty

Police officer Trainee. Some duties would include learning how to do reports this could be before the police academy your duties would be limited until your fully trained.

Official rank might be something like: Patrolman or Patrol Officer. Unofficial rank might be something like: Rookie, Newbei, FNG, cannon fodder. . .

Job duties? Anything the senior officers can get out of doing.
