Get some layers cut into it. Don't use gel. Its too heavy for your hair. You need either hair styling cream or mousse. My bet is on the mousse without seeing your hair. Apply the mousse to towel dried hair (do not rub hair, but squeeze it dry with the towel). Get a bunch of little clips and pin up sections all over your head. Allow it to dry as much as possible this way rearranging clips as it dries. This allows the air to circulate underneath and dry quicker as well as allows the clips to take the weight off the curls and allow them to dry curlier. Use products such as curl life from matrix, or matrix amplify. for shampoo and conditioner, stick to something not too conditioning so as not to weigh hair down like a daily shampoo and a light conditioner.

Keep your hair in a towel to remove most of the moisture, then work mouse(extra hold) through your hair with your fingers. Dont comb it out, just turn your head upside down, and squeeze your hair,( a hand full at a time, kind of push it up at the same time towards your scalp) continue to do this as it dries, or use a drier on low setting with a diffuser. After it is fully dry, dont brush, only finger comb, or us a hair pick. I love this look, It looks like you had a perm.

scrunch it meaning sorta curl it right? i think i know what your saying.
this sounds insane, but i think it works. instead of using a towel, let your hair airdry for about 20 minutes, then use a peice of paper and dry your hair with that. it helps the hair to not friz, and it also makes it a little wavy. for some hair it doesn't work, but it works with others? :/

Towel-dry your hair, then flip it upside down and begin to scrunch in a curling mousse. As you scrunch, blow-dry your hair using a diffuser.

Towel dry hair, use an anti-frizz serum, flip it upside down, use a good spray gel on it so it doesnt clump or get hard. Run your fingers through it while blow drying, lightly hairspray it. Good luck!
