I don't think that the west is moving towards being secular, but I do believe that they are moving towards pushing religion into modern times. People feel as though they are able to worship how they want to and don't feel stuck in their parents religion. We are striking a balance between religion and real life. I am a Pagan and feel like my religion is becoming mmore mainstream and people have less misconceptions about how I choose to worship.
In America Atheists certainly don't have preferential treatment in the government which is run mainly by WASPS.

What a laugh! Is "In God we trust" on the money? How many courts can you be sworn into with a secular oath? How many oaths of office are NOT Christian? How many non-Christians are electable? How many people at your place of work are open about being secular?

Preferential treatment? What crap! What!? You won"t let us indoctrinate your child? That's persecution!

We are moving toward secularism because of the failure of religion to perform intellectually and philosophically and, most importantly, spiritually. Not - no - to mention all the betrayals of trust by abusers in so many venues.

Excuse me - when have atheists ever received preferential treatment from ANYONE, let alone the government? I mean honestly. We have a man in the oval office who swears that he has conversations with god, comes up with faith-based initiatives, refers to the war on terror as a "struggle between good and evil", and panders to every fundamentalist christian group in the country. I'll admit I have no idea what you're thinking, if you think atheists get any special treatment from this government.

I don't know about your country, but here in the U.S. atheists do not get preferential treatment from the government. In fact, atheists are frowned upon by both major political parties (the Republicans especially).

Nope. Govrenment and media are becoming more secular - and rightfully so. The majority of Americans still at least believe in some kind of higher power.

I absolutely, positively believe Christianity is completely false in its interpretation of how the universe works and the nature of deity. But I believe that, because deity is literally part of us and the world we live in, a majority of people will always believe in God even if they have no "proof." There's no "proof" to substantiate any sort of gut feeling, but we all know they're very often accurate.

Yes it's true, I have been receiving preferential treatment from the government. I promise never to believe in god, and I never have to pay taxes. They also encourage me to leave out the "one nation under god" out of the pledge of allegiance as well.

If we are moving towards being a secular society it is because of backlash against hypocritical christianity. Those that use the Bible to spread hatred and judgement. That would be a good thing.

Sure, that's part of it but it has deeper roots in the Jewish belief that Christianity is the source of antisemitism,so anything that can be done to suppress it is justified. Thing is,those chickens come home to roost. Jewish kids are just as affected by secularism as anyone else. Probably only about half are religious, making Judaism one of the smallest religions on earth.

I think it is because, this seems to be the Age of Reason. We were raised to see things as they really are. A myth is a myth and we have been taught to recognize and doubt anything associated with it. The underlying lessons of the Masters, are viable and should be taken to heart but one must think that much of the supernatural happenings were added by Man to make it more appealing to the uneducated would-be followers.
