We just adopted two 3-month old Shepard/Rott mixed puppies from the Animal Shelter. They were spayed and neutered today. I brougth them home and noticed that while they were napping, Niko, my boy, was breathing extremely hard. He is napping now and still breathing faster than normal. What could be wrong? Should I make an appointment to get him checked out?

TIA

Could be a little stress from the surgery. There is some pain the first few days, and like people, pain can cause rapid breathing. A stress reaction. Give it tonight and if you are still concerned in the morning, call the vet. He or she will tell you if the pup should be brought in for a check. make sure the pup is getting water too.. the anesthetic can be a little dehydrating.

If the panting doesn't stop you should see a vet, but there are other possibilities. It is possible he was dreaming, for example.

Did he play very hard before sleeping?

Keep in mind being adopted is very stressful although it's hoped it will be GOOD stress in the long run. Everything is new and different and they might be a little scared.

But if he continues to breath very heavily or if he's still breathing that way when he wakes up, definitely check with a vet.

They may be stressed from the surgery, offer plenty of water, you can take their temp. with a rectal thermometer place Vaseline on it place about 2 inch inside the dog's rectum and hold in place for 1 min. Normal temp is 102.5 if the dogs are running 103 or higher call your vet at once.
