We've been dating for eight months, but for about 2-3 months now I've been trying to get my boyfriend to clean his room.

It wouldn't be a problem if there were just clothes strewn about, but there are DVDs and CDs and food containers and lots of other random stuff. Walking from the door to his bed, there's no guarantee that I won't step on something fragile or disgusting.

I've asked him nicely, tried bribes/exhortion, tried talking to him about how much it bothers me (it's really distracting and gross and hindering), but he won't do it. He keeps saying he will, but then blames it on laziness/busyness when it doesn't get done.

I'm not asking for a full clean here; I just want him to get rid of the food containers (so he doesn't get bugs) and to clear a pathway from the door to his bed.

I'm sick and tired of this. How can I get him to clean it? What can I say so he won't get annoyed with me for constantly bringing it up?

Yeah, it's gross, but there is no real way for him to do it. Since it's not your house, you can't make him do anything. Lots of guys have messy apartments/rooms etc. That's just how they are. Unless, you live with him, you really can't force him to clean his room.

I say, keep bugging him about it. Maybe one day he'll do it, but don't hold your breath.

I wouldn't clean it myself. If you do it once, he'll expect you to do it everytime. If you are in a serious relationship and plan on getting married, clean his room in his apartment will indicate that you will continue to clean up after him for the rest of your lives together.

My friend did this and it worked! Fight fire with fire. He's used to you being the clean one so he evens it out by being a slob. You'll clean it up after a couple of days go by where he doesn't and he probably realizes this. SO... be him. Be a slob. Leave nasty things where he goes. Dirty clothes and undies, girly things... makeup.... whatever. Don't do the dishes. Leave old food cans and fast food cups in places he likes to kick back at (in front of the computer, in front of the Xbox, etc) Eventually, if you can stand it, the place will be disgusting and he will realize that each person has to pull their own weight or you guys will just be living in filth and chances are he'll start changing, at least a little. Most guys won't clean up when someone tells them to or asks them to. They'll do it when it starts to bother them and no sooner - so... make it bother him.

Next time you're at his house, pick up the containers yourself, and then take them to the kitchen or the trash can, your choice. Then start cleaning his room yourself, ask him for his help. He obviously doesn't care if his room is clean or not, so cleaning it won't bother him.
