It is a strong almost musky taste. Venison (deer) can be quite strong especially if it is an older animal. Moose is much milder. Elk would probably be a good one to try first, it is the closest to beef. I've never tasted something like squirrel.

Squirrel does not have a gamey taste if pan fried. It tastes a lot like chicken. Deer will taste strong if it is an older buck. You want to kill a young deer if you are going to eat it. Hope this helps.

...the closest i can think of is corned beef,,,,not so fatty but a distinctive taste.....try eating some then you'll know
