Somewhere in Leviticus is a comment about how you should mark you flesh, something like that. The historical reason was that a lot of other religions used tattoos and piercings not just for their holy types, but for others as well. I believe the Maori in New Zealand have specific ink for their priests that no one else is allowed to have (in fact, I think it's an insult).

One regular interpreted the line that read something like "mark not your flesh" to be a warning against doing it yourself. God wants you to have a professional tattoo artist/piercer do it. You'll just mess it up yourself (see, you're being looked out for).

One person responded here that Muslims can't due to "water not being able to touch the skin", but then another Muslim said it wasn't an issue. I believe that is a Shia versus Sunni difference.

Hindus and Sikhs I don't know, but I think the former are ok with it. I *vaguely* recall a segment from the Gita that talked about it being no big deal. I suspect Buddhism and Shinto don't care.

According to the old testament, yes it is. It is a sin to defile your body in any way. That means peircing, circumcision, tattoos, branding, etc. However, Catholics have taking the writings of the bible and manipulated them time and time again for their own financial gain.

The reason for that is they want to alienate the LEAST ammount of people. The more people the scripture casts aside, the less people put money into the plate.

However, the most important part of the Bible is having a personal relationship with Jesus. Weather or not you go to church every sunday, or tithe X% every week, have faith.

Does the new testament overwrite the old testament? I don't know. All I know is, I have tattoos, and I also have faith.

I hope this helps.

A few years ago I found a website that really helped me with my decision to get a tattoo. Ultimately, MY reply is that "No, it is not a sin to get a tattoo" but I HIGHLY suggest you check out this website (it also contains information about the context of Leviticus)

God commanded the Israelites not to make tattoo marks on their bodies... But there's sufficient evidence to believe that the reason why He commanded them that is because some people of other religions put tattoos on themselves as a part of their rituals, and the Israelites were called to be set apart.

Hope I helped.

I don't believe it is a sin. I am a devout Christian, and I cannot see it being a sin unless you are 1. Defiling your body with Satanic marks (666, dragons, etc.). 2. Worshipping personal Gods or yourself. Basically, its God's body, so put something worthy on it if you plan to.
A cross on the heart is my favorite, i'm getting that soon. Just be careful.

I always was taught that it was a sin, but you have to go with what you believe in. If you listen to everyone else your whole life you will never make any choices for yourself. So to answer your question, do what you think is right.

I'm personally not a Christian, so I can't necessarily tell you straight out whether I believe it is or not. However, I have plently of Christian friends who have tattoos, and who don't believe it is. Also, you might want to read the arguements on this site in favor of religious tattoos. My friend sent it to me. http://www.religioustattoos.net/Bible_Support/index.php

I was told by a minister that you have to be careful when getting tattoos or piercings. This is how supposedly evil spirits or demons enter the body. Plus you never know if this person is into witchcraft or something sick and imparting something into you. I wanted to put like an angel or cross on my arm and I was told this. Scared me enough to say "no."

Actually it is. If you refer to the book of Leviticus, it states that you should not get tattoos; however, we do many things on a daily basis that are sins. God is very forgiving, if you just admit wrongdoing and ask for forgiveness.
