I guess my predicament is this, I am all set to join the Army and will be taking the ASVAB and getting my physical next week. I know what job I want and everything. Well I started talkin to my buddy who just got back from Iraq, he's a marine and just talkin to him makes me want to join the Marine Corps, I wanna be like him and I want to go take the challenge. But I'm not sure if that's a good idea.

It was always in the back of my mind to join the corps but I got convinced by the army recruiter and now I feel like I'm making a mistake.

What do you all advise me to do?

Follow my heart into the corps or just go with what I was doing the army.

From my stand point as a pre-listed person in the Marines (Unfortunately didn't make it past boot camp due to medical reasons beyond my control), I am in favor of the Marines.

My husband is being shipped Tuesday, April 3rd to Iraq for his second tour.

There is a lot of pro's and cons of each service branch.

You have to find what pro's and con's fit your life style the best. Some people prefer Army over Marines, and Marines over Navy etc.

My husband prefers the Marines as he only gets 7 months in Iraq instead of a year or more when it comes to Army.

Army provides more gear free compared to Marines have to buy their ribbons, medals etc.

Pay is a little different. Housing is a little different.

I believe Marines are better suited for dress, motivation and training.

Cons of the Marines can be: less quality food (chow hall or MRE's). Depending on the person and their "tastes".

Unless to the ranks of Sgt and above, those lower in rank are treated like a 3 year old sometimes (as what my husband says). But in ranks, usually in any military service, it happens.

Army gives bigger sign on bonus's, but Marines offer pretty good re-enlistement bonus's too. Depending on MOS, how many years service, where located etc.

You just have to look at both branches.

Do not base your choice off of recruiter. That is the worst mistake you can make. Take it from myself, do not listen to recruiters promises. Their job is to recruite you. You are their extra piggy bank and they will be like sale's men to find the right things to convince your life belongs in their branch. The same goes for Marines and any other branch. Look at them as the people to get you in, but don't look at them to get you the better deal. That is up to you on that.

You follow your heart.

Not go with what is thrown at you.

This is a commitment you're making for the next 8 years of your life.. (counting active and reserve obligations)... Make sure you're doing the right thing for YOU. Take the information you have and contact a Marine Corps recruiter and see what he has to say about it. Remember, though, both of them will say what they have to say to get you to enlist. Know what you want... know what your strengths and limitations are... and pick the branch that will give you back as much as you put into it.

If you're looking at going into an infantry-based MOS, you'll be safer in the Marine Corps. Nobody trains like my Marines. The situations may be a bit more dangerous, but the training you'll get as a Marine, and the brotherhood of the Marine Corps will be your best protection.

well if you wanna be infantry, go with the corps. i wanted to join the marines because my dad was in the army and my uncle (my real father figure) was a marine. but being that i wanted to be a mechanic, i went with the army because i could get it in writing what my job would be with the army, where if i was to go with the corps, i would have signed as a mechanic but could have been many different things. basically whatever you score highest on the asvab on, (which was the artillery section for me and thats definately what i dont wanna do) but if you want a combat mos than more than likely the marines will give that to you.

hope this helps

why dont you still take the asvab, you DO NOT have to sign anything until you are ready. the recruiters will B.S. you into thinking you HAVE to do it then (the day you take the test or are "on the floor" getting your physical) but you dont have to sign any contract that day so pay attention to what they are telling you. So, i think you should just take the asvab, see how you do and what is offered. If you dont like what you see then dont take any of the jobs (speaking in regards to the army) you can always go in a week or two to check out if anything new is available in regards to jobs.

also, talk to the marine recruiter too. get information from them and just figure it out for yourself. just get the information so you know you made the best decision you could for yourself so that later on you have no regrets. dont rush into anything on a whim. weigh out your options cause its your life.

i think its a pretty simple, if all you think about all day long is joining the marine corps, then thats what you should do. what it boils down to is whether or not you really want it. don't settle for something you aren't one hundred percent sure you want to do and will enjoy doing- then you only have regret.

If you have the "guts" like the "300"...that's GUNG HO , Let's GO!
If not train for a promised career after the army...Navy makes good training offers also...either way...you're a HERO to US and UK red-blooded citizens...

First don't always believe what recruiters tell you. They will lose their cushy job if the don't recruit enough.

If you are going in the service, use your God given brain to decide what YOU want to do

instead, ask yourself these two questions.

am i prepared to die for some who hates the war just as much as some who supports it? yes?V no? don't join the military.

do you want to be happy? yes? then you know what you have to do.
