I am going crazy here, I have been sick for about 20 hours, a very mild case of food poisoning but one that nonetheless was able to wake me up in the middle of the night in a very hot sweat, send me running to the bathroom, have me pass out in said restroom, and wake up freezing and soaking with sweat. needless to say, awful, but I did not end up vomiting even once.
I've been dizzy all day and mildly nauseous. I had two peanut butter sandwiches about 6 hours ago but have decided I can't test myself with anything like that again - though I'm not VERY hungry i feel like i must eat something else before I pass out. But every time i get up to grab food I just think that it's an awful idea and it's bound to make me ill...

short version: is there anything a person with a mild case of food poisoning can eat before the symptoms are gone that won't make things [temprorarily] worse?

i am a student so my options are limited: i have rice, soups, beans, bread, spaghetti, couscous, tuna, bread...

i should remark that this is indeed a *light* case of food poisoning. I've had it several times before and know the dangers -- i am taking the advice of drinking water slowly and steadily...

I thank everyone for their time and help. I have stuck with some crackers.

I hope that you are not eating Peter Pan Peanut Butter it had a recall with people getting salmonella. If you continue to lose fluids go to the ER. If you have to eat- try saltines first and see if you can them done. Get some Gatorade to keep from getting dehydrated. Try some warm tea and toast, go easy with your stomach. I really wish you go get checked since you passed out.

You really sound like you need to get to a doctor. what did you eat that makes you think you have food poisoning. It could also be an allergic reaction to something.
For the time being, if you insist on treating it yourself, go for canned broth or comsomme' and tea with a little natural sugar in it. That is, not artificial sweetner, but real nasty old white sugar. It has a palliative effect on the body plus will give you a little energy. Once your body calms down try a little plain rice or couscous to ease the stomach cramping.
Drink room temperature water in small amounts. Chicken, beef or vegetable broth is available in cans, be sure you dilute it with water and sip it. Avoid salt, spices, alcohol, any dairy products and acidic fruits or veggies. If you can get some saltine crackers, it will help to ease the hunger.
I really think you have something that needs professional attention if you are still sick after a full day.
In case it is an allergy avoid whole wheat and peanuts and other nuts. No stimulants like coffee or chocolate.
If you aren't feeling better in the next few hours, get help!
I hope you have a room mate or close friend to help you and keep an eye on you.

No peanut butter or other greasy foods. Some people get relief from nausea from very cold, real Coca-Cola, the kind with sugar; chicken soup with plenty of salt might also help. Getting hydrated will make you feel better and is worth trying even if you throw up some of what you consume, just so it doesn't get the nausea going again.

There is also an OTC preparation called Emetrol, a lemony syrup that is very good for calming nausea. There are slightly-cheaper store brands of the same thing - it really works.
