A friend of mine had this same problem and what she did is had the wedding at one place and for the people that couldn't come, she made a wedding documentary. It started off with her and her groom shopping for their wedding attire. it went through some of the special moments at the rehearsal dinner and then from getting ready in the morning of the wedding to when the bride and groom drive away in their decorated car. She said the distant family loved it.

Well traditionally when you have a scenario like this one, the WEDDING takes place near the brides hometown. However, it does have a slight nitch - where are you going to reside? If you are to reside here in the states you should have the WEDDING and formal reception here in the states. You can have two receptions though!!! One for immediately following the wedding and then one a month later near hubby's (or vice-versa) hometown. It doesn't have to be a big to-do either. Have a grand ole' BBQ at a park with rented pavilions or something. Have a caterer do the food so you aren't trying to cook - just mingling with guests.

If you do the two reception thing - imagine that each party will have only a small amount of people compared to the larger party with all the family involved. This way it becomes easier on the finances to do two separate ones - one big to-do and one smaller to-do.

Good luck. It gets hard when you have family all over but want them all to share in your special day.

Can you find a place that's about 1/2 way between the 2 families, and have a small wedding there? Or, if you plan the wedding about a year from now, then that will give family members time to save the money to travel to the wedding.

We have same problem. First we considered having the wedding half-way between the two states. But he wants beach wedding. So my side is flying there, we are going to take care of the lodging, and we are going to put at the bottom of all our invitations No Gifts Please.
