3 men pay for a hotel room for one night. The total cost for all 3 was $30 which means each man paid $10. After the 3 men had gone to the room, the clerk at the front desk realized he had overcharged them $5. He sent the bellhop to return the money but only had one dollar bills. To keep it even between the 3 guests, the bellhop decided to give each man $1 and keep the other two dollars as a tip. If each man had paid $9 and the bellhop kept $2, where did the other dollar go?

9 x 3 = 27
27 +2 = 29

I just don't get it.

The math is incorrect. If they had been charged $27.00 for the room originally, they would have each given the man $10.00, and each received $1 change, making the math problem 9+9+9=27, and 27+3=30, the $3 being the key. Instead, the way the problem reads, it is turned into 27+2=29, which is where the confusion lies. The problem should be $25 (room rate) + $2 (what the owner kept) = $27, and $27 + $3 (the change the three guys received) = $30.

In other words...

The $2 should be subtracted from the $27, not added to it -- since they were overcharged by $5, the room actually cost $25.

They ended up paying $27, $25 for the room and $2 to the owner. That $27 plus the $3 refund is the original $30

So,

The missing dollar didn't go anywhere...it never existed

It's all in the way you look at it. Do this instead:

$30 - $5 = $25. Each men get $1 refund. $25 + $3 = $28. Add the bellhop's theft of $2 and you arrive at the original $30 tendered.

he originally charged them 30, but was only supposed to charge them 25
30-25=5, then the bellhop keeps 2 and gives 3 to the guys.
so 25+2+3= 30
does that make sense the way I wrote it?
