In no particular order but chronologically:

Tim Flock (anyone that could race with a monkey in the car has got to be good)

Curtis "Pops" Turner (partied all night, pass out in racecar, wake up and race)

Glenn "Fireball" Roberts (he could race any type car, any type track, anywhere, anyday)

David Pearson "The Silver Fox" (the absolute master of the outside pass and slingshot) Only 4 full seasons and 3 championships. Ninth all time starts and second all time winner. He won an astounding 18.29 percent of all races he ran and was on the Pole in 1 of every 5 starts.

Dale "Ironhead" Earnhardt (to him, 2nd place WAS truly just the first loser and he hated to lose) Could do more with a bad car than most could do with a good one.

Basis is not on championships but on driving ability only.

I cant really say who the best ever were all I can do is say the best I've ever seen race and why I think they are the best ever.
1)Richard Petty is an easy #1 on any ones list I would think. Cant argue with the most wins ever and tied for most championships with 7.
2)Dale Earnhardt cant argue with his 7 championships either
3)Alan Kulwicki only driver (to the best of my knowledge) to own, operate, and drive for his own Winston Cup Championship team. Who knows how many wins and championships Alan could have had if his life had not been cut short in '93.
4)Jeff Gordon cant stand him but his record does speak for itself.
5)Bill Elliott holds the record for fastest speed in a stock car and also has lots of wins and he is a past champion.
