During a hida scan you will be placed on an xray table & given a special drink that will show up when you are xrayed. Thie amount of time it takes for this to get through your system will be recorded. About half wa through the procedure you will be injected with radiopaque dye through an IV. As this medicine starts to make your gallbladder contract & spit out bile, you may feel a little discomfort. It is not bad, just a little crampy. If your gallbladder is not ejecting enough bile within a certain time frame, your gallbaldder is considered diseased & will have to be removed.

I have had this procedure myself & was up cleaning my house the next day. Of course different people have different pain tolerances, but this was no problem for me. Your Dr will give you pain pills to take at home. Those should hold you over. request something like percocet. You do not have to eat as much with this pain med to avoid nausea.

& get up & move as soon as possible after surgery. this will help remove co2 gas that is used to insuflate your abdomen during surgery. If the gas stays in your abdomen because you haven't walked it out, it will give you pain in your chest.

I hope everything goes well for you.

Yes, I have had both and had to have my gallbladder removed. It was done laproscopic type surgery (no incision) just the small puncture type places and I was out and back in work in just a few days.
As for the scanning, I ended up taking a nap while it was going on, for it will last longer than just an xray, so you can see it was nothing to be afraid of. They will try to make you as comfortable as possible. Good luck with your test.
