Our school has an unofficial policy to separate twins after kindergarten unless the parents specifically request they stay together. They said they have found that each child has a better chance to succeed and develop their own self when they are not together.

Why do you feel they need to be split up? Is there a problem leaving them in the same class? Would there be a problem if they were just siblings and not twins? Do they function better together? Do they function better apart? Do they cause trouble together? If they get along and behave normal as a pair then leave them alone.

I vote for splitting them up - they'll develop their own identity and won't always have that competition that many twins develop. My brothers are twins and my husband has a twin. Both my parents and his parents have said splitting them up worked better for that same reason - personal identification. They are already compared on so many levels - school is definitely not a place for this. Split them up.

Absolutely. As a teacher, splitting the kids will help them to develope their own identity, their own friends and interests. I have do not recall being in a classroom with twins unless, there was only one for that grade level. They need to develope relationships with other children.

Hey I am a Sub/Teacher and I have taught several sets of twins in both situations. I have found it works best to keep them together for K4-K5 and let them follow their friends into their own groups as long as they can still socialize together at school along with their friends. (Are they boy/girl or boy/boy or girl/girl? - it would affect my decision as a teacher. I would probably keep same sex together until 1st or 2nd grade.)

my experience with twins are my grandsons. they HAVE to be separated to get any learning done. one will dominate the other in the same class. they may feel a little anxious at first but they will get used to it in time. its for the best they are separated at school also cuts down on the confusion on who's who.

moste schools prefer to separate twins beacuse it helps them to make other friends and concentrate on school work. the twins i care for were in separit classes and it was found that one has a learning disability...some thing that would not have been cought until later if he had been with his brother beacuse twins tend to help each other (witch is not a bad thing but can get in the way in school). separateing them can also help them to assert their individuality.

My twin and I had to be put in different classes cuz we fought to much. When we hit 4th grade we would switch class rooms all the time it was fun.
They may have problems socializing with other children if you don't seperate them tho.
