Whenever I sit for longer than 10 seconds in a conversation that is dying down, I always wish I had the words to say to make that other persons day, or at least the rest of their day more enjoyable. What do you say when you idle?

What if the goverment is hiding stuff from us.

Bring up the latest movie I've seen or rented, talk about what's the newest program on my computer, talk about latest book I've read, what's new on TV. And of course there is alway, so how's the war doing today, not always an up topic, but everyone has an opinion on the war.

You say nothing. At this point, you find this person to be non compatible to talk with. If you found them intriguing, you would have no problem with small talk. Move on, to someone who has something more stimulating to say or challenges your intellect.
