Whatever breed you do choose, the important thing you must do is:

Socialize your dog early. This gets the puppy accustomed to being around other people and children. A good rule of thumb is that your dog should meet 100 people/children in the first year. Take him/her with you on outings whenever you can and invite guests to handle the dog.

Dog's that are not socialized properly are more likely to be unfriendly.

Good luck :)

I have learned a lot becomming a Dog Training Instructor. One being you shouldn't always assume that just because a dog is a certain breed that it will act a certain way. Although, it is a lot easier getting certain characteristics to come out of some breeds then others. Labs, in general, are very sweet. You do have to have a lot of patience though because they take at least 2-3 years to calm down. Goldens can be sweet, King Charles Cavalers are lap dogs, Pugs,Beagles, Mastiffs,Great Danes, Mutts. With any dog breed though, it's very important to study up on what they were bred for and what their downfalls are. You need to know that you will have the patience and understanding for the different breeds. Like the Lab, make sure you'd have the patience for it to calm down. Beagles can bark a lot and constantly have their nose to the ground. One of my biggest pet peeves are people who come to me complaining that their Husky pulls. Hello, it's a sled dog, why did you get a sled dog if you don't have patience with pulling? Etc. I would go the resuce route where they foster the dogs. These people live with the dogs and can tell you all about their personalitly as if they are good with children, other dogs, cats, etc. . Also, I would do a temperament test on the dog. Here is a good site with a very good temperament test................

pbrc.org

If the place does not agree with you doing a temperament test, I would be leary. They should not have a problem with it if they really want the dog to get adopted and the dog is fine.
Sorry about the long speach. Another big pet peeve of mine is people who get dogs without putting much thought into it. You know who ends up getting it in the end? The dog. Just like to help make sure the future dog parent and the dog is a happy match. ; )

Any dog regardless of breed can be. In order to have a nice and sweet dog you have to put work in the dog so they will have to be trained and socialized.

All breeds -pure of mixed have the potential to be kind & sweet - it depends how they are raised & what the parents temperments are like Meet the parents of your potential dog if buying from a breeder - if your rescuing a dog from a breed rescue or pound spends alot of time with it and walk it to discover it's personality prior to adopting it.

probably one of the kindest easy going dogs there is is a mastive (I'm not sure how to spell it). Although they are a giant of a dog they are very loving.

We personally have a shuit-zu that is very quiet and well mannered.

A lot depends on how the dog is raised and trained.

Golden Retriever or....Adopt a puppy or a dog! Most of the time you can find a purebred at the pound. Go to petfinder.com

It'll cost less, and it'll save a life!

A mutt could always be good. Try getting a mix of dogs that you believe to be nice. It'll be the perfect dog for you1 ;)

a Siberian Husky is a good breed. They are awesome with children, they have a lot of energy to keep up with a kid or 10 lol, and very friendly. Also good for security because they just "look" intimidating.
