Develop a strict nighttime routine like washing your face, then brushing your teeth and hair etc. Soon, your body will recognize those actions as bed time, but make sure you follow the same order. This is long term.
Your room should be dark, cool, quiet and comfortable.
I have a sleep CD that tells me to imagine my body filled with blue liquid and to let each little body part starting from your big toe "drain".
If you're still having [problems you might be too stressed and need to find ways to relax to get your mind off things. Maybe you need to talk to a doctor if this doesn't stop.

Reset your sleep/wake pattern by exposing yourself to bright light for 30 minutes straight within the first 15 minutes of waking up. Then at night, make sure you don't have the t.v. on. The flashing lights have been proven to disrupt your sleep pattern. Instead, you should softly play mozart or beethoven, as their music has a mathematical equation to the rhythm and it promotes healthy sleep. If you get into a better pattern, you will train your body to sleep when your head hits the pillow. Also, avoid caffeine (it will reduce REM sleep) and high fat foods before you go to bed (like cheese) will actually release chemicals in the brain that cause nightmares! Sleep well!

When I'm having a hard time sleeping I get up and walk around with the lights on for about 5 min. then lie down again and picture "white noise" (Snow on an old tv) make it turn into shapes and pictures of nice things. Just picture the Snow (static) It's like watching a Cloud! Works Like A Charm.

Read at bedtime. The lef to right movement of the eyes mimics REM sleep.
Also, don't lay in bed tossing and turning, get up go sit on a couch in a different room until you r ready for sleep. Alos, avoid caffeine and alcohol before bedtime.
You can try low dose(3mg) melatonin which is available over the counter. It is the natural human sleep hormone.

make sure your bladder is empty
make sure you're comfortable and there's no extra noise
focus on breathing as slowly and deeply in through your nose and out through your mouth as you can....this will slow your heart rate. Think of your favorite vacation spot or winning the lottery or something to take your mind off the daily worries...It works for me.

You must creat what they call a sleep room.
It must be dark, no tv or radio. Dark as in letting no light.
comfortable bed, warm enough.
Quiet enough.
no telephone.
Then you only go in there to go to sleep, nothing else.
If you exercize enough and use a sleep room, you will sleep.
