Today me and all my friends and family had a big get together at Laura's place in Hollywood. When we all went our seperate ways at the end I forgot to give my friend Bren her camcorder back that I borrowed and she forgot to give me my payment that was from somebody else only I was to recieve it through her.
I called her on her cell and told her to meet me on Hollywood & Vine. It's a popular meeting spot. So we did 2 hours later and I gave her back her camcorder in a brown paper bag and she gave me the money that Jesse owed me.
I don't think I got more than a block an a half away when the CHP pulled me over. They said I was being detained on suspicion of trafficking!!! They searched my truck and found nothing.
Now I have a court date! What am I supposed to do? Do I need a lawyer? What is wrong with these people, I didn't do anything wrong. Why did the cop stop me? My friend was also stopped as well and is also in trouble with the law. Did I break the law in any way?

Correction it wasn't the CHP that pulled me over, it was the LAPD.

I'm telling the story as truthfully as I know it. The money given me was $7,000 Dollars Canadian. It was owed for the wood deck that a cousine and I constructed in Jesse's back yard in Hollywood Hills. Jesse is Canadian and keeps most of his money in a Canadian bank back home.

If you have any prior convictons associated with drugs, you could be in trouble because of it.
It is their responsibility to PROVE you did something wrong and if there is any doubt, you probably need a lawyer just to be on the safe side especially if Laura's place is in a high drug area.
You need to be sure to have ALL parties present at your hearing. . . Laura,Jesse and anyone else that could be involved in even the slightest way and make sure that all of those parties involved can be tested and tested clean. . . if not, leave them at home.
When you get out of this deal,in the future always take the time to look at how your actions could be misinterpeted like this was.
Good Luck

Not that I really believe the story, since you would not be given a court date if they did not find something illegal.
Thinking you did something illegal is not a crime,
So unless they found something illegal on you, they would have told you I am sorry and sent you on your way.
And your friend who has a cam corder in a bag is in trouble for having a cam corder ???
Sorry but something missing on this story, did both have some drug on them ??? and what was the money owed for and how much/?
But never go to court without an attorney.

The brown paper bag probably raised suspicion. If you did nothing wrong, don't fear.
Also, importantly, did you give them permission to search your vehicle? If they did so without a warrant or probable cause, the cop was breaking the law. Simply pulbicly trading a paper bag and some cash shouldn't be much trouble. Don't worry.
It will blow over. You did nothing wrong.

I have to wonder what was hidden in the camcorder. Yep, you need a lawyer. If you have a court date, then you are either a offender and have a charge against you or you are a witness against your friend. Either way, you should know the charge. Your story sounds bogus.

Assuming what you said is true...
You did not break any law. The only evidence against you is circumstantial. If they are trying to pursue these charges, you do need to get a lawyer and gather up anyone who will tesify on your behalf.
The prosecution has nothing against you. So you should move to have the case dismissed.

I don't think they will have very good evidence and the D.A. probably won't even indict you on this. The cops probably felt like fools when they realized you were just giving your friend a video camera and decided to write you a ticket anyway to overcompensate for their stupidity. Talk to a lawyer and maybe he can negotiate with the D.A. and then there might not even have to be a court date.

ONE GOOD THING I WOULD DO IF I WERE YOU. IS TO APPEAR IN COURT WITH THE PERSON THAT PAID YOU TO CONSTRUCT THE DECK SO THE MONEY COULD BE SPOKEN FOR. THE RECEIPT FOR HER CAM CORDER WILL PROVE OWNERSHIP OF IT . THEN HOPE THEY DONT MAKE UP CHARGES AND BRING EVIDENCE THAT THEY HAVE CONFISCATED FROM SOME OTHER CASE .SOME COPS ARE DIRTY TRUST ME I KNOW I LIVE IN NEW ORLEANS THE BOTTOM OF THE DIRTY COP BARREL.

You do need a lawyer, if you have a court date. If you feel you cannot afford one, I may be able to help.

That depends...what did they charge you with?
If they found nothing then it seems to reason they would not have anything to charge you with.
What are you leaving out?
