This nightmare has been bothering me for a few days, it was very realistic. Besides that, I wake up often from nightmares with my heart pounding, sweating, and often takes awhile to fall back to sleep. How can I help myself?

I don't get worked up over nightmares usually, but this one really hit my heart, even caused me to cry briefly. "My boyfriend and I were walking in a parking lot at night from a movie or something. I looked ahead and noticed a homeless man with a dog. As he passed us, he stabbed my boyfriend in the side several times with a utility knife and took his wallet. What scared me the most was the pure shock on my boyfriends face as he lay on the ground." I woke up with my heart pounding and in a cold sweat. I don't ever have dreams that make me avoid certain situations, but my gut is just telling me to do so. I stick with my gut almost always, and because this was a nightmare and wasn't real is what has me torn, do I stick with my gut? or do I blow it off as a nightmare? I feel I should also mention that I wake up to my heart pounding and in a cold sweat maybe once or twice a week. I also moved to the other side of the US recently, I am 22. Maybe that has something to do with it?

I cannot afford professional help. I do not have insurance because I simply can not afford it. If I could afford it I wouldn't be asking my question online, lol. Thank you for the help guys.

I hope you are feeling better. I think you are doing a very good job dealing with your dream, by rememberhing it and trying to figure out if it means something.

It was a bad dream. It's only an expression of subconscious fears. You are afraid of being separated from your boyfriend. You may not be able to handle the thought of him ending it, or leaving you, so the idea of someone taking him from you is easier to fathom - even if it is a bad thought.

Does he know about this dream? What you need to do is let him know about this dream and how it made you feel. I can't tell you what he will say or do, but that is the conflict, and you will feel better letting him know about what it did to you.

I am...let's say, older than you. I have had all kinds of dreams and nightmares--in color too!

Sometimes, especially if you have people with ESP in your family, it can be a premonition. Having said that, let me tell you the odds are against you.

I also think it's possible that you have something unresolved in your head/mind. This is nature's way to give you notice. You need to dig down deep and see what your fears are.

I discovered that watching viokent TV and/or movies before bed causes me more nightmares.

After I started to read for 15 minutes or so (I read longer though) or just meditate then you can get to sleep and relax. You will be surprised at what you can do, your brain learns stuff everyday. Teach it.

Take a warm sea salt bath and read before bed is another suggestion. But I garantee you will feel better whatever you decide to do.

I don't know how u can help urself, but if the dream was very vivid and realistic, then yes, it could be a premonition. Especially if the dream is recurring. Maybe somebody is trying to tell u something.
My aunty had a dream that her kids and her husband were at the airport without her and she described everything, even down to what everyone was wearing and the fact that her husband was limping badly. The only thing wrong with the picture was she was not in it. She said she felt as if she were watching from a distance.
Weeks later she died in a car crash.
My uncle tried to stop the dream from coming true by changing the clothes him and the kids were wearing, but the dream did come true otherwise.
In a subtle way, my aunt was being told that she was going to die.

I agree with all three of these ppl thus far,
I have had the pounding, sweating dreams myself.
What do you remember about it? All? Some?
Were you running from someone or being chased?
Lost? Just scared? Falling? Fighting?
It could symbolize something that you are going through,
It could be something that you have already gone through, possibly even repressed,,,,
It could just be daily content intake like the one fella said.

you cannot afford to add any more worries.

know worrys, i'm 4o and still get a bad dream every now and then, but it's usually from something i watched on tv. i learned that what you watch on tv affects what we dream about. for example; if you watch cartoons before you sleep, you have calm fun dreams, watch something scary and your mind incorporates the fear into something you can relate to into your dreams which in turn makes you feel it was real.
also, did you know you can control your dreams? if you know it is a dream then you can make it however you want.
i personally dream of being a superhero and i know nothing can hurt me and since i know its a dream i always win.
try it, once you know how to control your dreams, nightmares will never be so scary

Not to sound too blunt or harsh, but you really should seek therapy with a local or trusted counselor. Those dreams could persist and develop into serious psychological problems or sleep disorder all together. Don't believe in premonitions or superstition, once you start believing, there is no limit to what you won't believe and it will start to control your actions as opposed to free logic based decisions. Well, I have spent years in therapy... and according to my social worker.. it is important to put your mind at rest before bed. Try to read, or do something quiet before you fall asleep. That could be par to the problem. That your mind is working over load and it goes into your dreams. Has anything traumatic happened in your life?

vivid nightmares are caused from something we have either eaten seen or read about = I know its hard on the body but you have to try and think of other things to feel better
