You probably have a missing audio driver. When you reformat your computer, XP will sometimes miss drivers. Check this:
Right click my computer.
Choose properties.
Click on Hardware Tab
Click on Device Manager
If the driver is missing or not working, it will have a Yellow "!" next to it. If you go to the website where you bought your comp (Dell, Gateway, etc) they will have the deiver you need.
Hope this helps!

If you mean that you completely wiped out your computer and started fresh then you have lost all your drivers. I will assume that you are using onboard audio(not an expansion card)
If you goto your manufacturers website and look under support and downloads you should find your audio drivers as well as your chipset drivers. Simply download and install. Good luck!!!

Kind of a silly answer, have you checked your sound settings under Volume Control? Right click on the speaker and "Open Volume Controls". Check the levels on all the settings. I went so far as to replace a whole sound board before checking that. Good Luck

Did you install all the hardware drivers (Including the sound card)?
Just check by going to >
Control Panel ---> System ---> Hardware (Tab) ---> Device Manager
If you see a lot of yellow arrows, that means you need to install the drivers (Usually in the disk provided with your PC)..
Hope this helps & good luck :)
