Hey there... Ive had my tongue pierced for almost 5 years. Its a quick sharp pain when the needle goes through. The swelling and *mild* soreness lasted a couple of days. I rinsed my mouth with peroxide after every meal... (still use peroxide sometimes). Its completely tolerable.. and as far as it ruining your teeth.. its an individual problem. My teeth are not chipped or cracked or anything... its completely up to you how much you play with it and how well you take care of it. You can do it!! I love mine. :) Good luck.

It is one of the least painful piercings. On that same note it is also one the easiest piercings to make a mistake on. The problem lies in not knowing the mistake has been made until weeks or months pass. One of the more serious problems is cysts of the tongue or cystic hygroma. These cysts must be removed by a doctor and this can be quite painful.
Something else to consider in your new piercing. The loss of mobility in your tongue. You don't realize how much you use your tongue until a problem causes you to lose mobility.
Lastly there is a condition that remains unnamed, and is just starting to be taught to piercers, but pain in a tongue that remains swollen even after the piercing has been removed and healed. The person's tongue remains swollen, and sore.
I'm not trying to scare you but these are some of the concerns with any piercing.

The piercing itself can be painful. Think about when you bite your tongue. It is a bit more painful that that, at least for me. Mine really wasn't too bothersome after. It was swollen for a few days, but not really painful. It may be a bit sore, but nothing too terrible. If you get it done, my biggest tip would be eat slowly until you get use to the piercing being in there. Biting the barbell hurts and can break your teeth. I had mine done for 8 years now, and I never had any problems, except biting the barbell. Oh, and make sure you tighten the balls, if they fall off they are easily swallowed. It happened once to me, very weird.
And to Kelso, it isn't there for the rest of your life. If you take the barbell out, the hole will close.

Nobody can tell you how badly something is going to hurt you. People have different pain thresholds and yours may be higher or lower than that of the person telling you their experience.
Any time your flesh is pierced, there's going to be some level of discomfort. Do your research regarding after-care, healing time, problems that can be caused by tongue piercings, etc and when you have all that information if you still want one then get it. If you really want it, it'll be worth a little pain...however you may decide, after your research, that it isn't worth the hassle or the pain.
It's all up to you.

How long it hurts depends on how your body heals. Usually when you get the piercing your tongue will swell for 3-14 days. During this time, your jaw can hurt, and your throat can be sore. I can take time to adjust to having the jewelry in your mouth and this can be discomforting.
No one can tell you exactly what to expect and how bad it will hurt because everyone is very different.
Go to a reputable piercer, and take care of your piercing and you should be fine. Don't let pain be a determining factor in whether or not you get something.

When you're sitting there getting ready to have it done, the piercer willhave you stick your tongue out as far as you can, clamp your tongue with something like mini tongs, usually counts 1-2-3, then next thing you know you feel a moment of not that unbearable pain, and the post is through your tongue. Then you have to keep your tongue stuck out so that your piercer can screw on the top ball end. Mine didn't hurt at all after it was all done but there were times it was uncomfortable when my tongue was swollen but it was only swollen for a day and a half.

It doesn't hurt long. It's more annoying because of the swelling than painful, imo. It only stays swollen for about a week or two. Suck on ice and take Advil for the swelling.
Make sure you're 18 and you go to a professional piercer. Self piercing is badbadbad and especially to self pierce your tongue... Ouch.

It was the least painful piercing I've gotten (I also have my navel, nipple, and ears done). It didn't hurt much getting it done. The day after your tongue swells and that hurts.
Take advil after getting it done and continue taking it for a couple days afterwards. It will help with the pain and swelling. You will have a lisp for a few days. Partly because of the swelling, partly because you will have to relearn how to talk.
Keep ice in your mouth right after you get it done. Don't chew on the ice (bad for your teeth) and don't suck on the ice (bad for the piercing). Also with sucking--don't use drinking straws while healing, it can disrupt the healing process.
Use listerine after eating, smoking, and drinking anything except water.
Eat normally, it will help you get used to having the piercing. My first day or two of having my tongue piercing I had to keep my head tilted to I could keep the food on one side of my mouth. Applesauce and mashed potatoes aren't as good as they sound--you don't realize how much you use your tongue when you eat.
Get it done--it's not that bad. Good luck!

It doesn't hurt that bad, but I've given birth to 3 children (all over 8#) and have tatoos. I just got one about a year ago & I'm in my 40's. The worst part is your tongue swelling!!! And getting use to talking with a piercing

It depends on how well you are able to handle pain. My tongue piercing hurt but it didn't feel like I was going to die from the pain. I did have a problem with drooling until I got used to the piercing but it (the drooling) eventually went away. I think it hurt for a few days. I don't remember because it didn't seem to be as invasive as many people try to make it.
