Just to reiterate--epiderals can be done even with tattoos. You can check out the facts here: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/lower-back-tattoo/AN01357. Also, tattoos do not "blow up" in an MRI. It was on an epi of MythBusters and they even put a person with tats into an MRI machine, used different kinds of inks, etc and nothing happened: http://www.tv.com/mythbusters/quicksand-bathtub-electrocution-mri-rays-and-tattoos/episode/368721/summary.html

Not true! The needles that are used in epidurals are made to slice through the skin, not carry pieces of the skin down with them. This prevents foreign matter from entering the spinal column (this includes ink stained skin from a tatoo). The only reason a doctor would not want to administer an epidural into tattooed skin is because it could leave a scar and ruin the tattoo. Hope you enjoy that tattoo that you might get!

No. They don't put the epidural that far down, it is in the middle lower part of your back. And the needle for the epidural goes into your spinal column anyway so the tattoo is avoided seeing as they are in the second and third layers of skin. Many many women with lower back tattoos have gotten epidurals, my supervisor has a rather large tribal lower back tattoo and had an epidural with her six month old son. People are just trying to scare you out of getting a tattoo. If you still aren't sure ask a tattoo artist, especially a female artist with children if she happens to have her lower back tattoed.

My sister-in-law has a lower back tattoo and just had an epidural, so it is not true. Also, the idea that tattoos catch fire in an MRI machine is also untrue. I have several tattoos and I've had several MRI's and none of my tattoos have ever caught on fire.

Not true, and tattoos do not "catch fire" in an MRI machine. Mythbusters proved that one false. I have a lower back tattoo and had an epidural just fine.

It depends on the doctor or the anesthesiologist. Most don't care. A few do and won't do the epidural. When you get a tattoo there is the possiblity of infection. Even if you never see it there is bacteria introduced into your body. Some doctors base everything upon that and refuse the epidural. Most of them don't.

We have answered this before...do a search.
It is not true. I think some doc didn't want his daughter to have one so he made that up.

Sorry Shawn that one is false. You must be thinking about tattoos and getting an MRI. Tattoos do catch fire in an MRI machine.
