Nothing compared to today. Taxpayers were forced to pay for two militaries, ours, and the Soviet Union's. Our politicians continually gave breaks to the USSR, sold them wheat cheaper than US bakers could buy it. We built the largest truck factory for them on the Kama River.

But today, we are loosing our freedoms, supposedly to fight terrorism. How much terrorism would we be subject to if we were not involved in the affairs of the rest of the world? We have troops all over the globe. We are constantly involved in squabbles between other nations. What better way to generate terrorism?

And what does terrorism bring us? It justifies the police state, to many people. Hitler gained dictatorial power over Germany when he got the Reichstag to pass the Enabling Act. This Enabling Act was something like the USA PATRIOT Act. It gave Hitler extraordinary powers, to protect the German people from "terrorism". The rest is history.

As a little boy, I was always afraid that Ronald Reagan would say something to piss off the Russians and they would nuke us. Especially when he called them "the evil empire". There were plenty of movies out there like "Rambo", "Red Dawn", and "The Day After" to name a few, that made the Russians look completely evil. My prayers revolved around at least being able to die with my parents in the event of nuclear war.

So that's nothing compared to what children today have to fear.

As far as terrorism goes, back in my day, terrorists were all about hijacking planes, flying them to the Middle East, and holding people for ransom demands. Delta, Pan Am, and United were among the most frequently hijacked airlines.

Ask the people of the USSR what kind of hardships they faced. Shortages of common goods. Oppressive government. Inability to speak out. Summary executions with the cost of the bullet passed on the the surviving family members.

I grew up during the cold war. The fear that Russia or China might drop a nuclear bomb was always in the back of your mind.
