Get a government job and keep building your federal retirement. You might not make as much money at first, but eventually you'll advance enough to better pay grades and the retirement beats any other plan offered by civilian employers.
Veterens have hiring preference at ALL government jobs. Here are a few to think about.

> Bureau of Prisons
> Department of Transportation
> Department of Energy
> NIOSH
> FBI

hello.first of all thank you for your service. i am sorry to say that you may not be able to find better employment in the civilian world. it is a damn shame that some one who served infantry cant find a decent job but its true. if i were you i would pull my 20, and get a pension. or at least stay in and switch mos's. you could be a cop, too much stress though-and once again too little pay. i would try something with the forestry service cuz your time in the army will count towards your new career. so say, if you spent 11 years as a game warden you could still retire. try the usda, they are very good with veterans, good luck!

I too am wondering the same thing. My husband is undecided as to stay in or get out. But if he gets out, what to go into. He to has only done infantry and has been in for 6 years now. But will be 8 years when his contract ends. He loves what he does, just doesn't want to have to go back overseas again. He is currently in Afgan, and has deployed to Iraq too.
So if you find anything good, please let me know.
Thanks.

I would hold on for another 11 yrs-- the hard part is almost over-- and just letting you know my dad had 12 yrs in and he reminds me almost daily about how he screwed up and is kicking himself-- although he makes a very good living he would like to have had the extra 40k a year for retirement:)

you could be a cop, just not in a big city where whiny minorities complain about police brutality, even though they pull the gun first.
