Get a cow bell, bullhorn, kazoo - something really noisy/irritating and some tinfoil and leave by the inside of the door . Every time he comes rushing at the door when you come home or someone comes in, make loud noise and rustle the tin foil at him. He is NOT going to like it but if it's a matter of safety and keeping him inside because he's an indoor cat, scaring him may be for his own good. You may have to be consistent with that for a few weeks until he gives up interest and make sure there is plenty of fun stuff in your house for him - toys, cat grass in potted plants and a clean accessible litter box. You may also want to buy an open window lock from a hardware store that fits into the sill and lock a screened window an inch or so ajar so he can have some fresh air in the day .

Make it a rule and habit in your household to jingle-jangle some bells that you will henceforth hang on the outside door knob before they come in and when the door is open. Ask frequent visitors to do the same. Keep a second set of jingle-jangle bells hanging in the inside door knob for anyone to jingle-jangle before opening the door. The point is to make as much rattling noise as possible to spook the cat from comong anywhere near the door.
Another strategy is ask a freind to hide near the front door with the garden hose ready. Make it so that when you open the door and the cat makes a move to dash out, the garden hose immediately hits him (the cat) Won't hurt him but since cats hate being sprinkled like that, he may associate the door with the bad experience of geting dunked with H2O.
My favorite strategy for really really obstinate kitties is to position my vacuum cleaner by the front door (or any door the cat likes to dash out from). Everytime I opne the door, I turn on the vacuum cleaner too - as simultaneously as I could manage it. Cats hate the sound of vacuum cleaners. When I do this, the cat always always scuttle to his nearest "safe place." Three or four times of this, then the cat never comes near the front door.

Broom them . I keep a broom by the front door for just that purpose. I started the broom business in the kitchen when I wanted to cook without the cats tripping me.Sweep them just like you were sweeping the floor-NOT HARD. I've even used the broom to lift them a couple inches off the floor and do a GENTLE toss and then chase them a little tapping the bristle tips on the floor. Doesn't take long- even my 14 year old (I haven't had to broom him since he was about 8 months old) takes off when he hears the bristle tips hit the floor.

I have this problem too, has your cat had time outside before (Mine had run off for 4 weeks and then came back, I didn't want that to happen again) ? have you tried a Zap mat? I don't like to use it but when it came down to my cats getting out and running away / getting hurt. I put it by the front door and put it on the low setting. this discouraged her from trying to make a mad dash.

Try hissing as you are coming in the door. My boyfriend does this and the cats usually get scared and run inside. However, I do it and they just run past me. So practice your hissing until it scares your cat!

Perhaps purchase a baby gate, to block off the front door hallway (if there is one).
