Hey all, I have a 79' camaro and a frustrating problem. I just recently pulled out my car for the summer and it was starting and running just fine. Now all the sudden the car will turn but wont start. I checked the plugs and they dont seem to be sparking. I threw in a new plug and a new ignition coil but still no spark. The car will turn but just wont start, any ideas????? Mind you I was driving it two days ago and it started up just fine, now nothing? I dont know If it has anything to do with the amount of water perspiration from the weather changes on the engine or not. It's been garaged but the garage temp is around 40 degrees and outside temp is like 70, hence, lots of sweat on the engine..............please help!!!!!!!!!!

check you battery and make sure it is fully charged. try to jam start your car. if it starts then go off, your alternator will be dead. one good thing would be to rent an obd 1 engine light checker from an auto shop. ( you can get it for free so long as you give thenm your drivers lisence) hook it up to your car, turn thr engnition 1/2 on the scan it. that will tell you whats up. starter can also be a problem. let me know when you get it going and what you will have done.

I'm not familiar enough with that year model, but you either have points or electronic ignition. Either can cause the problem you describe. The points would be beneath the distributor cap. Check to see if they are opening and closing. Electronic ignition works from a sensor under the distributor cap which operates an ignition module. Check for voltage at the low voltage side of the coil when engine turning over. If not, you either have a bad sensor or ignition module. You will need either a 12v testlight or a voltmeter to do that test.
As suggested by another poster, a distributor cap could be a good cheap investment also, rhough I doubt that is the problem in this case.

normaly on these type of ignition systems there are 2 common problems with them. the first is that noone ever puts the ground strap back onto the ign coil which causes the coil to burn out and the second problem is the control module that sits under the rotor. if the module goes bad the engine will die suddenly or will run poorly and wont restart. hope this helps.

In your distributor there is a ignition trigger which can be
replaced fairly easy. The way you described it running good
and then there is no spark all of a sudden, when this happens
there is a good chance the ignition trigger is the problem.

Check and re-check the gap setting. Are you sure the plug wires and distributor cap aren't the problem?

Change your Dist cap and rotor, that would be a good place to start, after that check the timing. thats where I would start. BTW what size motor is in it?
