L-carnitine is a compound that is claimed by some to help "life-extension" (make you live longer). It may act as some kind of antioxidant; but there is evidence that it protects against the damage that mitochondria (the cells energy generator) accumulate over the years. Also, (acetyl) L-carnitine has been shown to protect against various neurological diseases in lab animals.

Acetyl-L-carnitine is claimed to be a superior form of L-carnitine, that is, that it is absorbed better (higher bioavailability). However I am not aware of any scientific evidence that supports this.
