Really consider your personality in your dog search. Having lived with two Papillons I know for a fact that a laid back person will not be happy with this breed. Papillons are get up and go kind of dog, they love to be mentally stimulated. They are also absolutely devoted to you, there is a saying the Papillon world that once you get a Papillon, you don't go the bathroom by yourself anymore. Grooming is an issue with these dogs since they are an long coated breed, they need to be brushed out once a week at the most. However they do make great lap dogs when they are tired.

I don't know much on Chihuahuas and can't really say what their personality is like or how living with them will be like.

My vote would have to go to the Papillion. While there may be a few good chihuahua's out there, they are far and few inbetween. The intelligence level of a Papillion is so much higher and there is really not much difference in the appearance between the two. I have heard that Papillions are hard to housebreak, but I can't imagine a chihuahua being any easier.
If you do decide on a chihuahua, definitely get a girl. My sister currently has 2 chihuahua's, one female and one male. The male is 1 1/2 years old and still not potty trained whereas the female has been trained since she was 6 months. Don't let people convince you there is no difference between male and female, they are lying!!! I have sworn off owning another male dog, females rule!! The female chihuahuas are EXTREMELY protective. Make sure you socialize it well.

If you want to research on your own this is a great website for all information on the different breeds, from temperament, grooming, intelligence, affection..etc

Another great website is www.dinovite.com It is a nutritional supplement. It helps with shedding, digestive problems, skin allergies etc for dogs. My sister just started using it for her long hair chihuahua and swears by it for shedding.

I have 4 Papillons (had 5 but one passed away almost 2yrs ago) and they are amazing dogs. I highly recommend getting one from a good breeder. DO NOT get one from a petstore (any breed for that matter). I would suggest checking out www.braylorspapillons.com/
That is where I will be getting my next one from. Do not expect a good one for under $1000.00. Getting back to why I love them...Their intelligence is hard to match in such a tiny package and get ready to be entertained. They are also the most devoted, loving dogs you'll meet. Mine also play hard but in the next breath will lay on my lap for hours. The term happy pappy is an understatement. Either way please do some intelligent research of the breed and email actual breeders especially the one I suggested. She is really easy to contact and talk to. The more questions you ask the better informed you'll be. Good luck!

its more of your preference, i dont know much about papillion's but looking through google images most are long furred. I had many chihuahuas that were crossbreeds with other types of dogs like dashunds. If you are having a hard time deciding between the two, I would try looking for both and decide from there (patterns on fur, coloration, personality, etc.) which one would i want to get. You might even find a mix of both.

Papillon:
They are steady, obedient and are not yappers. Some blood lines can be nervous, high-strung and timid. They can also be difficult to housebreak, but are in general easy to train otherwise.

Chihuahua:
He can be noisy and may require patience to housebreak. Many owners simply paper train this breed. The Chihuahua must resort to his sharp teeth in self defense. It is not recommended for children. For some, they may be slightly difficult to train, but they are intelligent, learn quickly, and respond well to proper, gentle (positive reinforcement) training.

I say pug! get a dog that isn't usually found in a purse. Perhaps adopt one save a Pug's life. Or get a mini husky crossbreed.
