They left England to escape state religion, to have the freedom to practice their own religion.

But, in essence, weren't they saying; "We don't want the King to dictate to our followers how they have to live... because that's OUR job."

I mean really, they wanted the freedom to practice one of the most oppressive forms of Christianity ever conceieved. Isn't there a certain amount of absurdity to this?

Many religious groups left Europe so that they could go from being the oppressed to the oppressors. I mean, if you have a monopoly on the truth, why not enforce it?

So you're saying Jim Jones and David Koresh weren't the first guys to found separatist movements, then?

The Pilgrims thought the Church of England, even after it severed ties with the Vatican, was still too "popeish" for their tastes.

Their concept of heaven must have been very, very far from the biblical "streets of gold" and "pearly gates".

What do you think they expected heaven to be like ... and what did they expect God to be like?

And from whom or where did they come up with all their stuff?

I think that sums up the difference between Canada and the U.S. In the U.S. you had a bunch of religious freaks start up a country, but in Canada it was a bunch of adventurers canoeing all over, trading with Indians. Now we see the result. The U.S. punishes anyone who's different from them, meanwhile Canada just grows into a healthy multicultural society.

left europe, killed north american natives wholesale, enslaved africans. but we should not judge, I can't hold all Christians to account for the actions of a few hundered thousand. You gotta admit the Christians knew better then to enslave Muslim Africans, Muslims are strong and fight back, they would have never worked the land for some slave cracker

Good point, since they tolerated nothing and killed people that weren't like them or believed like them.
