If I were President and was not shackled by congress to do what I'd want to do, I'd send thousands more troops into Iraq. Those in Germany and Italy, as an example. I'd close the borders and stop all street traffic. I'd warn the populace that if one sniper fires or one roadside bomb goes off, neighborhoods would be bulldozed. There would be a hard line for Iraq and insurgency of any kind would not be tolerated. I wouldn't tolerate non compliance from the Iraqi government, either. And I'd get the job done without paying attention to your protests any other whines. If we had taken this stance originally, it would be over by now and it would never have escalated to this degree.

I would end the war in Iraq by partitioning it into 3 seperate states for the 3 groups that are doing the fighting for political control. That is the only way to solve the problem. Iraq was not meant to be a country.

As a GOPer I know that the Iraqis will need border protection or all has been in vain. The troops could leave tomorrow if crossing into Iraq was an automatic "Death From Above" sentence. There should be 20-30 burning border-jumper-mobiles blazing 24/7...each with 3-8 charred corpses.

I would send more troops, not let any vehicles leave the large cities,(Block the cities) i would let the army deliver supplies the iraqi citizens need, then after a while i would gather troops around the large cities and begin a massive sweep and search. Not a single building will go unchecked. Put cameras on streets, while still having the cities blocked off. After a couple weeks i would allow traffic to leave and go but every major roads going in the cities will have troops and tanks. And if evrything went well i would do this to smaller towns and keep doing it. But in some ways i dont know if this would work?

1) Call an International Summit with all of the neighboring states, Iraq, and remaining Coalition forces.
2) State that in order for the US to leave the region, that there must be a cooperation for regional security, that the US has no intention of staying in Iraq, and its departure is guarranteed with peace, not insurgency.
3) Ask the neighboring powers what they can do to help facilitate this, underscoring that any help in this issue will help resolve any diplomatic impasses in other affairs.

I would simply plan a pull out date. I 'd secure a large airfield in Baghdad and slowly pull all the troops into the city.
Meanwhile, I'd meet with the UN, NATO, OPEC and regional powers and negotiate for an effective independent Iraqi government, which would never happen even if we stayed.
Then I'd put troops on the US borders and start rounding up illegal immigrants.

Unless you pull out you can not put a date to an end of a war.

The US should stay until the democratic elected government of Iraq does not need our help.
When they ask us to leave, or when it is plain to us that they do not need our help anymore.

I do not understand why some people do not want the Iraqi people to have the same liberties and freedoms that we have, has always seemed a little hypocritical to me.

You can't stabilize a country while it's neighbors train terrorist and send them to kill you!
I would give Ayatollah and his physco counterpart an ultimatum to disarm immediately or face the "consequences" which would probably include a nuke or two or three!
You also have to deal with Syria in a like manner so these tyrants get the message the world isn't playing their games!
But it also demands the cooperation of ALL countries because they face the same potential with these rouge nations! They have no value for human life as demonstarted with their savage beheadings! That in itself would warrant a nuke!

Keep troops in Iraq for another few months to a year, keeping a time table. Put more enphasis on tracking and stopping insurgent funds and training Iraqi forces.

Leave and declare victory.

Relocate some forces to Afghanistan, rinse and repeat.

Well...I've been over there and I've seen the way the country is being run.

I would say...pull out at least half of the troops and spread the rest of them around Iraq. Soldiers should be there to support Iraq if they need us, but we should not be actively patrolling the streets. We need to let Iraq sink or swim...learn how to run their own country.
