For general freshwater fishing (in the US), I believe the SHAKESPEARE UGLY STIK + BERKLEY LIGHTNING spinning rods are supposed to be pretty good, with ABU GARCIA not bad either.... you get a FREE BAG with the Shakespeare.

But then choosing a rod can be quite a personal thing (some people say it's a bit like choosing who you're going to marry).... and so a rod that feels great to one person may not feel so great to you when you have a go with one exactly the same, so if you're buying it for yourself (rather than as a gift for someone) you may want to try a couple out and see how they feel.

For reels, SHIMANO are the best no matter what part of the world or type for fishing you do....... with DAIWA not far behind.

BASS Fisherman is exactly right. A GLX series G Loomis rod for $345-445 and Shimano Calais DC 4x8 reel $649.99. Best $1095 you could ever spend on bass tackle. Of course this rod comes in 14 different styles, sizes and actions and you will want a minimum of 1 each (maybe 2 each) for a grand total of close to $15k. Line, lures, bait are all optional (of course).

Team Daiwa Steez looks like a bargain at $950 but you don't get the digital feature of the Calais DC.

If you want the very best those are your options as far as freshwater factory bass tackle goes. Custom built rod tapers will obviously set you back several more $.

Saltwater gear is going to cost you WAY more for "the best".
All you people that think an Ugly Stick is the best have very good sense of humor.

a better question would be what would be a good fishing rod/reel for (kind of fish) every rod and reel combo is different if you want a spinning rod reel combo i would suggest Daiwa Exceler Reel with a Browning Fishing Citori Rod i use it and really like it if your looking for a bait cast you probley want a
Abu Garcia Ambassadeur C4 Reel and Extreme XPS Rod
but with any rod reel combo it is what you like and what your fishing for so just go and try one if it does not work sell if on ebay and buy a different one tell you get the one you like

My preference for rods is G. Loomis (a little costly, but superb craftsmanship) and Garcia Ambassador series level-wind reels (bait-casting). Fenwick has a good line of rods also. Might add that I fish primarily for Salmon and Steelhead and use G. Loomis rods w/ the old reliable Garcia 5500's level-winds (those "puppy-dogs" are 40 yrs., old and still kickin'!!!). The list of rods and reels that you've checked on are all good brand names, what it really boils down to is personal preference and what type it would be , spinning or bait-casting? If ya' be new to the game, a Spinning rod and reel would be your best choice in set-up's, those bait-casting reels can be a little tricky when it comes ta' casting, but practice makes perfect ;). "Fish On"...

G-Loomis and Sage for the rods.
Shimano and ABU Garcia for the reels.
they are high end rods and reels but they are built to last a lifetime when properly cared for and well worth the extra money for the initial purchase.
have fun

i like ugly stiks from shakespeare. not a fan of their other rods though (although still have a mantis that works okay). ugly stiks arent the best, but can take a beating and last forever+ if it breaks you get a new one free. also inexpensive. depends on what you want to do. small livebait in ponds and such to bait fishing in inshore waters an ugly stik classic in different sizes. for lures i like ugly stik lite inshore. work great in freshwater and tough enough to handle big snook. plain ugly stik lites are cheaper but have foam and not cork grips, bend easier and are less proficient at working lures

3 of my 6 poles and reels are shakespeare and they are my favorite. 2 of them are ugly stiks. The other three rods and reels are a 2 shimanos, and a pflueger. I would stick with shakespeare, cheap, sturdy, and reliable.

Deep Sea Daiwa(reel)
Fresh Water Quantum(reel)
Deep sea Ugly Stick(rod)
Fresh water Shake spear(rod)

The effectiveness is up to the fisherman!!!
But if you want quality and long lasting equipment hands down this is it. I have fished many tournaments both fresh and salt water. After talking with pros this is the variety of equipment I heard over and over as being the best quality regardless of there sponsorship.
And this is what I own. I hope this helps you, It helped me make the decision who else could give you better info than these people.

It depends on the abuse you are going to give the real.Abu is a good reel that will last you a year if you fish every other day,Pfluger a cuople of years and calcuttas probably top my list but they are about $400.00.I'm not a big diawa fan.If it is for your husband who tournament fishes get em a calcutta.
