Chris... Today, everybody seems to plan so much further ahead than I used to do (60's & 70's) that the more advance notice one can give, the better. In my day, 1 or 2 weeks was more than enough time to plan my calendar. However, today, I find myself looking ahead by monthly dates (vs weekly) more often than I used to. Therefore, to obtain the most RSVP's with a "yes" reply, I would say 4 weeks.
However, if you are looking for positive responses from your closest friends and relatives and are willing to provide an "out" for your "aquaintences", then 2 weeks advance notice is OK.

How formal is this party? I suppose I don't move in the highest social circles... written invites usually only go out for weddings and as you know they go out EARLY. But if the occasion requires an RSVP and you are using reply cards, you need to allow transit time for them as well, so I would say at least a month in advance. I don't have a great deal of faith in the post office, so I'd want to allow at least a week for mailing in each direction, a few days to allow for a response, and caterers like to get a headcount as soon as possible.

Depends on when the party is. If it is a holiday weekend, more notice ought to be given, up to four weeks. Generally, three weeks is good. Absolutely no less than two weeks.

One month to three weeks, any sooner and they forget about it, any later and they do not respond in time.
