A sandbox is a great place for kids to have fun and experiment with new kind of textures. Just place it under an area where the sun dont hit too much or put an umbrella on top of it.
Check out toys r us links i provided you for details:

Just make sure you cover it well after playing and change the sand once in a while. I dont think they are messy. Just place it on cement, easier to clena that placing it nera dirt.
After the kids play i would recommend a shower of course!

I bought one for my son last Easter (he was 2 1/2 at the time). It was a Little Tikes that was elevated like a table so that we wouldn't have creatures in it. It also came with a cover. Half of it was sand, and the other half had a castle with a moat. He loved it and is looking forward to playing with it this summer. He didn't get very messy. I just bathed him at the end of the day. I put it on our back porch so that he would be in the shade and I wouldn't have to worry about sunburn. The sand stays nice with the cover and the water had a plug on the bottom so that you could drain it and replace it with fresh water. I think it was around $35, plus the cost of sand (cheap). Toys R Us has some good ones this year. Hope this helps!

My daughter loves her sandbox. I have a turtle sandbox with a lid. They are about $25 at Walmart. Definitely spend the money and buy good play sand. Check at Home Depot, Menards, or Lowes for the sand. Many of these places carry play sand at this time of year. Start with just enough to cover the bottom and see how it how well the kids like it. Make sure you cover it back up when no one is playing in it or it will get used as a litter box.
Your kids should not have to shower right away unless they find water for mud pies. Dry sand usually will brush off easily.

I would put the sandbox in an area under a tree, because sometimes the sand gets really hot and the kids could get sunburn. They might be a little messy playing in the sand box, but they will have an absolute blast. They will be occupied for a long time. Depending on how dirty they get its your preference if they need a shower.

I wouldn't; first of all, a baby should NOT be playing anywhere near a sandbox--who knows what's been dumped/peed/left/buried in there. Babies are like labradors for a while: everything will go in their mouths and that's a risk I wouldn't feel comfortable about taking.
A better idea is a ball pit or ball-box; it has higher sides, so the baby is less likely to fall into it, and the balls are a lightweight plastic that is easily cleaned and brightly colored so they're easy to keep track of.
Just my opinion.

I have one for my kids. We got it when they were 2 and 5. They have little tykes plastic ones with lids at Toys R US. They are around $60. They also sell play sand for $4 a bag. I needed 3 bags to fill ours up.

If you get a sand box I would recommend getting one with a lid, keeps animals out that way. It would not matter where you put it. I do not think a shower would be necessary if you buy one with a lid.

You know we literally throw out the sand box....the CATS kept crapping in it and the worms/ snakes kept making it home.
Best wishes.
My friend recommends PeeGravel instead, but I was not intested in that much hard work.
