The seven groups in English society are: The Great, who live profusely. The Rich, who live very plentifully. The Middle Sort, who live well. The Working Trades, who labor hard, but feel no want. The Country People, Farmers, etc., who fare indifferently. The Poor, that fare hard. The Miserable, that really pinch and suffer want.
Question: where might you describe such groupings in the USA as a whole?

I think that it is a tough question. It is difficult to say that we should consider the US as a WHOLE as middle because there are many who really do suffer and it feels wrong to ignore that.
However, I would think that the average American is of the middle sort. Even those who are very poor have the options of government aid. While it does not nearly bring them to the middle it helps them to want less.
