The Taliban is a militaristic group of fanatical Islam. They dictated over much of Afghanistan with an evil force. They also allowed Osama bin Laden to set up operatiom and training in Afghanistan that led to many attacks on the US and other western interests.
The war in Afghanistan is 98% about the Taliban. This is who we're fighting, this is who we drove from Afghanistan. but they keep wanting to return. Thousands of these fanatics have been killed, you would think by now, they'd have gotten the message they are not welcome back !

The Taliban were the faction that ruled Afghanistan prior to the US kicking them out.

The Taliban started out as a band of religious students/mercenaries in the early 1990s. Since the Taliban were primarily from the Pashtun tribe (which is concentrated around the Afghanistan/Pakistan border) the Pakistani government supported them in an attempt to gain influence. They wound up gain a measure of control over the country and allowed various terrorist organizations to set up shop in Afghanistan.

Contrary to liberal myth - the US never had anything to do with the Taliban.

They've been regaining their foothold there for the last year. And the people there are suffering because of it. The South is becoming dangerous again all the time, and the North is getting dangerous at night. The Taliban really NEEDS to be cut off permanently. There can be no peace there or anywhere else as long as they exist at all. They're worse than a cancer.
