Lots of water, try to urinate before and after having intercourse, (kinda tricky I know, but as long as you can initiate a stream it's flushing bacteria from your urethra) the act of intercourse can actually push bacteria into the urethra, wipe front to back when going to the bathroom, some people swear by cranberry juice or you can buy a cranberry supplement (this will acidify the environment in the bladder and bacteria do not like that). Avoid carbonated beverages, the sweet sodas provide an alkaline environment that is more bacteria friendly.
Also, do not, I have to repeat this, do not "hold it" til you are ready to burst. When you feel like you have to go to the bathroom. Go. By waiting and holding it you are prolonging the time for bacteria to climb the urethra and enter the bladder.
Hope things work out for you!

Depends on why a person is having them. I have gotten a couple in my life. And then I had something happen to me that felt like a UTI that lasted for a year! (Urologist said initial pain was UTI, it was treated, but pain never went away and all tests for bacteria were negative). I'm ok now, but this is what I do:

- Always pee after sex.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Always wipe front to back.

And that's about it for me. I know, a bit personal, but that is how I live my life and I have been pain-free for about 8 years now.

Lots and lots of water. No carbonated beverages (there is an acid in them very irritating to the bladder) Some say cranberry but..... this is for people who have sporadic acute UTIs..not those with chronic ones, as it is irritating.

Cranberry juice. It can get harsh to drink, but there are other flavors like cran-grape or cran apple that have the same affect. Also I like to mix straight cranberry juice with 7-up, it's like a punch.

Take a cranberry supplement everyday, drink lots of water and always use a condom whilst having sex - it may sound weird, but sperm can irritate the urethra and bacteria can cause the recurrence.
