The building of the tower was an act of defiance against GOD. In effect, they were saying they didn't need him and could take care of themselves. Their arrogance knew no bounds. They were seeking to defeat GOD, by combining their strength as a 'join' people and not be scattered, so that's exactly what GOD did. People who don't speak the same language can't scheme bad things together. They don't get along either. As Mexican citizens and American citizens have shown. So, they actually brought the confusion on themselves by their evil intentions. Their tower was actually a sort of idol or rather an ALTAR they were building that represented their worship of their own egos.

For the same reason that it is happening right now right here.
To keep the controlling interests, called status quo, in power.
To keep the masses from acquiring too much knowledge.
That is why the richest country in the world is especially targetted by the poorest educational system. Any doubts? Just go through this blog at all levels.

its a story that tries to explain why people speak so many languages.
there is pretty moral to this story, that i have heard. the people building the tower were trying to build a great and awesome tower before G-d scattered and confused them all. the moral of the story taken in a certain perspective could be that if humans simply tried to understand each other and work together for something once again, we can achieve great things.

It's not US. The people of Babel were trying to build a tower to Heaven. Being that they spoke the same language it was easier for them to come together for evil. Now with different languages we have confused ourselves. I don't know.

The Bible is not the written word of God, it's written by man and many many men at that. Not only that, but it has been translated and interpreted so many times that of course it's going to be confusing.
Besides, everyone reads and understands it differently [open to interpretation].

God's always bashing down pride. Even as an agnostic, you may eventually find that life tends to do that. It's the big sin that the Greeks called hubris, thinking you are the master of your own destiny. It's carried to its extreme by many neopagans today who actually wish to become their own gods.

Well see, if he hadn't, humans would have built a tower into heaven and invaded heaven like in that SouthPark episode where Kenny dies and they decide to build a ladder to heaven to go see him and ..... Oh never mind. The Bible is just some of the less intelligent mythology out there. Even dumber than Zeus and the Olympians who at least appreciated a good debauched party.

He confused us because he told the people to SPREAD OUT and multiply upon the earth. But the people decided they knew better than God and build a shrine to their "gods" trying to reach heaven and God intervened.
God knew what he was doing...

Same reason for everything God does: the scientific explanation has to be somehow rebuked by religious nonsense.
