My two otherwise healthy 4 year old kitties were recently sick. Both had elevated levels of BUN and Creatinine. Hayley required hospitalization for IV fluids and Tino needed two doses of sub-q fluids. Both are doing better now. I can't be sure but I think the illness was related to the food recall. They both had eaten Nutro Max Classics Canned food - Lamb and Turkey Cutlets manufactured on Jan 22 07. This particular food was not recalled but it does contain wheat gluten and was produced during same time period as the recalled food. I contacted Menu Foods, the FDA, and Nutro and nobody has gotten back to me. I just wanted to alert people about the possible bad food. Has anyone else had a similar experience with this food?

I am so sorry that your kitties were taken ill by this dastardly contaminated pet food. And I am soo glad that they are getting better. But I am surprised that the canned cat food that you described was not listed as part of Nutro's recall becuase accoridng to the news, ALL Menufoods' "cuts and gravy" style petfood is affected by the recall. I think Nutro made an error in not putting that particular item in their list of recalled canned food. The dates match and the style of canned food match.
I know you have stopped feeding that stuff to your kitties, but if you can, retrieve the used can and keep it in a ziplock bag for documentation. Get copies of your pets' treatment records from the vet and join one of the class action suits going on right now.

Oh, report your case to Pet Connection.com - they tabulate all the cases of pets affected by the tainted pet food.

THANKS for giving all of us a "heads up" about this.

The wheat gluten was affected by the rat poison. There is a web site you can go to to report it. You give the name of the food and the lot number. Keep the can. The name of the web site is Pet connection.com and you can fill out a form on the internet on their site and they will help you report it. I have the list on me and yes that was on the list. The ones that are on the list that I have are:Nutro max gourmet classics and nutro natural choice. On the news they said not to give any kind of canned food until they have this problem resolved. They also said not to trust any can food. There is a class action suit going on. Someone set one up on yahoo somewhere.

no,but sorry to hear about your cats-and i am happy to hear that you took responsibility to take your cats in when they were sick-I've heard a lot of people on here that don't have money to take their cats to the vet and want our opinion on the cats illness-well the way i think of it is people need to think before buying a cat and relies there are going to be other expenses that go along with caring and taking care of their pets!!
but besides that I'm sure if you went onto a search engine like ask or google-you would be able to find some information as to the law suits going on with the nutro company and maybe find a way you could get in touch with them and possibly get your money back from taking your cats to the vet especially if maybe it was caused from the food!!
good luck!!

I think that it was the turkey. Turkey sickness has been going around this year a lot. I'm praying that your kitties will not get ill anymore. Best of Luck!

I am glad you were able to save your cats! There is a class action suit starting in Chicago. See if you can get your medical costs reimbursed.
