I am replacing my kitchen sink and I'm undecided as to stainless steel or acrylic. It needs to be a drop in sink as I have formica countertops. Any suggestions ?

Over the years in home construction, I have found the stainless steel sink is best. It is also the most forgiving when glass is dropped into it. There are many qualities of stainless steel sink. Don't buy the cheaper ones they are too flimsy for garbage disposals. Vibration in the operation of the disposal will loosen the waste trap connections.

you can get cast iron which has a variety of different colored finishes baked on to it. Heavy, keeps water temp longer, and is very durable.

Stainless steel, if a GOOD quality of stainless steel is a good choice, the finish can lose it's lustre over time, but overall pretty durable.

Enameled steel, also has a baked on finish in a variety of colors. semi-durable, drop a heavy pan in it, and it usually chips.

Swanstone is like acrylic but has the charecteristics of cast iron, soild color all the way through the sink, can be scratched but overall, pretty durable. available in many different colors.

Same for acrylic.

I personally like a cast iron sink. But as long as you don't buy something that is "cheap" you should be happy with any choice you make. Try a plumbing supply house that has a showroom or go to one of the big box stores like Lowe's or Home Depot and look around. The supply house will probably be a little more "pricey" but will also have a bigger selection.

There are wide varieties of kitchen sink designs available. These styles range from a few heavy duty applications to non heavy duty ones. There are some which are installed below the surface of the counter top. This style is called base mount or under mount. The configuration of this sink is that the material in the counter top is noticeable at the gap of it.

Top-mount kitchen sinks, likewise brought over-mounted, rimming toward oneself or drop in kitchen sink, have a lip that rests on the surface of the ledge, and they are normally held set up by cuts and screws. They have a tendency to be less demanding and speedier to introduce than under-mounted sinks. Top mount sinks come a cluster of materials and styles (single, twofold or triple bowl) and might be utilized with any sort of ledges.
