Yes it works the back a lot. You can have a great looking back by doing pushups. Of course you have to make sure you are doing them correctly. Your back must be straight and stiff when doing the pushups for it to work great. I say this because i do them a lot and i think my back and shoulders look pretty great.

Not so much. You'll get a little stimulation to the back, but not much and not enough to count as a real workout. What you will perhaps feel is from your back stabilizing during the movement, along with your abs.

Pushups work primarily the pecs, triceps and deltoids. Not much back activity in there beyond support.

Most of the time it is your arms doing the work not your back, but I guess that your back could be doing some of the work. It says on a website that I found that it is an upperbody workout, if that helps?!?
